okay but consider!!!
lohen is good at reading people. especially mallory. that's important with a brat like her, he has to learn exactly where to stop pushing, what limits he can test and which ones are set in stone. he has to know exactly how much she can take to learn her lesson without causing her any unneeded grief.
he can tell straightaway when she's feeling insecure. maybe he was even there for that meeting of the sexenzirkel and can tell it had an impact on her. she might never say it out loud, no. but he saw the way she drew into herself a little more as the others talked about their bonds with their lohens, the way her brow knitted together, the way she looked at him with... not fear. not sorrow. he can't pinpoint it. emotions aren't his strong suit, but he knows that whatever she's feeling it can't be good. he soon enough realizes that she's... well, insecure.
as if he's never felt that way himself. mallory's a cutie. sure, she's a brat, but she's fun to tease and so very cute and so very pretty. there's no one he enjoys bullying (/aff) more. and sure, lohen's been told he's attractive, sure, but it's almost always part of a larger statement, usually something like... "the vice captain is really handsome, but with that personality of his..."
he might never have said it outright either, but he's wondered the same thing. when will it be too much for her? will she get tired of him? when bratting and teasing gets to be more annoying than fun? it'll happen. he's sure of it. sooner or later she'll want to leave. surely. surely...
but seeing her insecure about their relationship, worrying that she's not enough...? that snaps him back to reality fast. no, no, he won't be allowing that. and really, what was he thinking? she'd have to physically cut him off her if she wanted to be rid of him. she makes him feel like no one else ever has, does, or will. every last bit of her is precious beyond a doubt.
so... surely varka will understand if he takes a day or two off. just to make sure mallory knows where they stand. she might not trust all the pampering and really he's not that good at the soft stuff, but he might just shyly mention that he just... wanted to make sure she had no doubt about his feelings for her. that he adores her beyond belief. just because he's not good at showing it the way other men do doesn't mean he doesn't feel it. and that doesn't mean he doesn't want her to know. no, no, if there's anything she should be sure of in her heart, it's that he adores her beyond all doubt!
and of course he will ALSO be putting her through the mattress with all the overwhelming force of his love. (he DOES get cuteness aggression about those little UWAWAWAs yknow?) they... miiiiiight need to spend that last vacation day shopping for a new bed! whoopsie!
I do not have covid. I have contracted fucking ELeazar. YOU CANT JUST HIT PEOPLE WITH A FUCKGIGN SENTIMENTAL FLUFF NUKE YOU MANIAC YUO CANT FUCKIGN DO THIS TO ME!!!!

She'd try to play it off as a joke. She'd try sooo hard. But we all know Lohen's far too perceptive to fall for something like that, and too stubborn to let it slide either. In general, Mallory thinks life is so much easier if nobody takes you seriously. If people start to take you seriously, they'll develop serious expectations. And she's sure she'd fail to meet those.
It's not that she thinks she's unlovable or something! Really it's not! She just... doesn't see herself as anything special, either. Not past the novelty of being amusing, at least. And that can only last someone so long. So she can't comprehend how he could be satisfied with someone like her, because in truth she has him on a bit of a pedestal. She's not delusional, she's aware of his flaws. She just kind of... views them simply as parts of who he is. Jagged edges that make him more unique and interesting, and she's always been drawn to people who are so unapologetically themselves, even if it makes them the nail that sticks out. There are no men like Lohen. There's only Lohen.
I think it shows best in her drawings of him, because beyond the quips and jabs and everything in between she really does think he's incredible. A masterpiece, some might say. Not her, she can't say it. It's too embarrassing. So her artwork has to speak for itself. But who knows if he even gets that those are her true feelings being conveyed? Would she even want him to get it? When it comes to this, the idea of potentially being mocked stops feeling exciting and starts feeling... gross. Terrifying. Painful. And who wants to deal with serious feelings like that? Not her. It's not even so much that she doubts his feelings are real, but that she doubts they'll last. She hadn't planned on becoming this attached, really. So she feels like she's setting herself up to be hurt. But forethought was never her strong suit...
Some word-vomit version of this is probably the explanation Lohen would receive if he really pushed, but this is the gist of it.
(The real irony is the total cognitive dissonance she'd have about him thinking the reverse, that he'd become grating to her. Like, no? If I was gonna hate something about you I'd hate it already. I think how weird you are is cute and funny and guys who are more 'normal' are just guys who are more 'boring'. You think I want you to act like some other boring guy? You sound so dumb right now. )
So all that to say, if he really insists on proving it to her or reassuring her however it is he sees fit, she'll utterly melt in the most humiliating way. Uwawawawawa.....
