Sometimes I see people watch this scene and they turn away despite the powerful scene because ‘oh crap, why’s she stripping in front of her dad? awkward’ and I think that’s a problem with our society in general.
Nudity isn’t inherently sexual. this is her father we’re talking about-- if their first thought was fucking incest when she started tearing her clothes I’m absolutely disgusted. I’ll say it again-- nudity isn’t inherently sexual. She’s fucking wearing a corset. She’s been less covered than this in her normal clothes! Just because she’s exposed doesn’t mean she’s proudly displaying her sexuality!
This isn’t anything about modesty or not. Jude isn’t even all that uptight of a ‘must be covered up and modest’ guy, this dress isn’t about how she was indecent before for not covering her legs, this dress is about his control over her. This dress was about extravagance in all its frills and layers. It’s about wealth.
Her clothes were already nice, but it was still a commoner’s standard of nice. It was business smart casual. Noble ladies are supposed to consistently wear black/white tie dress codes. She had to wear this dress because Jude believed she shouldn’t dress like a commoner, and she respected that. She met him in his standards, because in nobility, if you want an audience with the head of the house, it’s common sense to first be polite in your greetings. That’s why she changed, and that's why, after she made her point, she tore it apart.
This is her breaking free from the restrictions of nobility, starting from the literal ones in her layered clothing. This is her speaking out-- something her father always rebuked her for-- and demanding to be heard. This is her tearing apart something that represents her father’s wealth-- that dress-- and declaring that she doesn’t care about riches. She doesn't need any of the clothes, because she is now baring herself as just the person, and not the clothes she wears.
