Koala is constantly surrounded by little bubbles of the the にこにこ/nikoniko sound effect whenever she’s putting on her smile, which is the Japanese ontomonpoeia for ‘doing something smilingly/with a smile.’
You thought this tale of racism and slavery was sad? Well you’re right, but also it gets much worse
Yes! Hello! I love Koala!!! Tell me, is there anything especially notable in how she speaks- Or maybe in how the Sun Pirates speak to her?
Yeah! It’s devastating!
Koala starts off speaking extremely politely, with polite forms and heavy use of kudasai (‘please’ but like, rather more polite) when asking the Sun Pirates not to kill her.
It immediately reminded me of something I brought up awhile ago, which is the level of politeness everyone shows the Celestial Dragons, even- especially- when the Celestial Dragons are committing atrocities against them. Koala’s speech when she first appears is very reminiscent of that speech pattern but taken up to eleven- she has that level of politeness in the face of cruelty pretty much hardwired into her.
After she’s travelled with them for awhile, though, her speech patterns appear to even out into something a lot more normal- by the time she leaves she’s talking much more causally and sounds like an actual normal person.

*cue sound of my heart breaking*
I’m willing to bet that Jimbei says “...” more than most characters in One Piece
Hi! I’m currently at fishman island and the flashback of kizaru w some rear admiral or something, he has it posted above his desk on the wall. It’s translated as “unclear justice”, I’m just wondering if that’s the same as what you read?
This? Regrettably the first half of it is obscured by the speech bubbles, unless there’s a better shot in a different panel elsewhere. It’s definitely something ‘justice’, but all I can see of the first word is that it ends with a ず/zu. I actually looked up this scene in the anime, but that didnt show me the whole word either, just that it ends in かず/kazu.
So my best guess would be 何方付かず/docchitsukazu, which means like... noncommittal/indecisive/ambiguous.
