As a caterpillar, it feeds on trees in the rose family, such as apple, cherry, hawthorn, peach, plum, and rose bushes. This one was picked up and raised on black cherry. They tend to press themselves against the stems of leaves for camouflage (many cherry tree leaves have red stems, although this caterpillar did not benefit!). As its name implies, the tufted bird dropping moth uses its colorful wings to appear like a splattered dropping on a leaf, avoiding detection as a food source for birds.
