Look, I know I haven't posted for long...

Starting at a new school is scary, even more so with a giant hearing aid strapped to your chest! At her old school, everyone in Cece's class was deaf. Here she is different. She is sure the kids are staring at the Phonic Ear, the powerful aid that will help her hear her teacher. Too bad it also seems certain to repel potential friends.

It's a pleasant little slice-of-life adaptation of Cece Bell's graphic novel, detailing the challenges of being a kid in the 70s who suddenly lost her hearing. The sound design is brilliant, with much of the dialogue filtered through hearing aids to put yourself in the main character's shoes, along with Cece's voice actress also being deaf. Plus Cece Bell herself provides the narration throughout the three episodes.

Such a wonderful book! Written based on the author's personal experiences, we follow Cece, a deaf girl who struggles with her hearing impairment while facing the already tough experience of growing up.

Whether she's being made into a commodity by "friends" or trying to deal with hearing-related issues (like the dreaded phonic ear, being forced to attend sign language classes even though you can lip-read, trying to watch TV, or even just participate in a multi-person conversation), Cece certainly faces her challenges. But it's not all gloomy - there are always a few good apples waiting to be friends! And as for her hearing impairment, well... it might just be her own hidden superpower.

Cece Bell’s semi-autobiographical story will leave you wanting to read more books featuring anthropomorphic bunnies.  Bell chronicles her own hearing loss story from a young age and the adjustments that accompanied it.  Rather than focusing hardships of losing her hearing, Bell focuses on the superpower she gained with the Phonic Ear and her transformation into the superhero El Deafo!  Readers are also treated to the extremely relatable ups and downs of Bell’s friendships and even her first crush.
