i think its also interesting how hanekawa had observed her for so long, though she'd said she really didn't know her very well: all the shots of middle-school senjougahara could be assumed to have been from her perspective
she mentions her lavish house, and her rich parents, the kind of "rumors" she's referring to that you'd expect to circle among girls that age: but thats what she remembers about her. what must she have thought of her? hanekawa is fond of araragi, and if we read her reluctance to talk about the subject as jealousy, then we could also interpret her feelings for her from that perspective: after all, senjougahara is also sickly and lonesome, but the one she reaches out to help is araragi
still, she states she'd heard "rumors," but all her observations feel as though they'd come from a personal place of onlooking. she also only speaks of her positively. it feels like a subversion of what you'd expect, being something distasteful, like a rumor explaining her sudden personality shift, but hanekawa has nothing but praise for her
its also a glimpse of what she was like before the trauma: genuinely a good-natured, kind, healthy and social young girl. she sets her up as almost a perfect standard. did she admire her?
side note: i have to admit here that i had no interest in monogatari before it was slightly piqued by an oomfs fanart a long time ago of senjougahara x hanekawa and that became the one thing i vaguely remembered/associated with the series other than the other stuff its notorious for but when i decided to watch it was mostly for what i'd heard about the narrative......... i swear
