#cat!zula

I was looking through the artbook again and saw this sketch of June with a kitty. 

Shisa had disappeared over half a year ago in the wake of the turmoil with the Avatar and that attempt to take the kid captive on his ship. Since then life had been....complicated. Ba Sing Se freed of Dai Li tyranny, and the improbable glimpses of his cat with the Avatar. He had spent a long time thinking when Shisa fell overboard that she'd drowned, and Uncle had taken it much harder than he did.

It was Uncle, not him, who went to Shisa first with a very apologetic look on his face as the cat looked at him with that kind of snooty manner cats could and yet an entirely human kind of disbelief. Especially when he extended his hand to her and quietly told her, kneeling down so his height-weight difference was far less, that he was sorry he hadn't caught her.

Iroh treated her almost like a person (not so long from now Zuko would find that thought to be a revolving door of emotions but....). Zuko just stared.

"You look like you've seen a ghost." He would have liked in later years to say he was dignified when the Avatar seemed to pop up behind him and surprised him. In reality he yelped and a few sparks of fire left his mouth.

"That's my cat," he said with a suspicious tone of voice. "What is Shisa doing with you?"

Aang looked over at the cat that took a few steps toward Iroh's hand and then nuzzled it quietly as Iroh closed his eyes and took a deep breath and quietly whispered where only Aang's wind-boosted hearing could register it "You give me more than I deserve. I will seek to prove myself worthy of it."

Aang blinked and then his eyes narrowed and went wide but he shrugged. He'd ask the old man about it later. For now......

"Hanabi?" He shrugged lightly. "Found her in the ocean about seven months ago and she's been with us since." He had a fond smile on his face. "Made our adventures a lot nicer, too."

He saw the way Zuko looked at the cat and then scratched his head. "I missed her," is what Zuko said. The two girls behind him were very quiet and very confused, Ty Lee mouthing to Mai 'all this over a cat?' (Ty Lee too would find this reaction hilarious in the worst way in just a few weeks' time).

When Hanabi turned her gaze she saw Zuko and then there was a moment of tension. Team Avatar looked from the cat to Zuko and back again and then she mewed and did a single slow blink. Sokka's nose twitched.

"Hanabi likes you," he said suspiciously.

He nodded.

"Well she was my cat first."

Sokka pursed his lips for a moment.

Does azula make little cat noises unintentionally? Like when she’s happy she’ll purr, meows?

This one is based off of my own cat, but when she is about to do something mischievous like pushing a cup off the table she makes little “chirping” noises- would azula be able to do that and that’s how Ursa knows when she’s up to something

100%! She both purrs to get what she wants because it’s her version of the puppy dog eyes. However, it also can happen unintentionally.

Like when her mom hugs her, Ty Lee is playing with her, she and Zuko are doing something, etc. Basically whatever would make human her happy, makes her purr as a cat whether she chooses to or not.

Meowing is a lot more controlled. She usually meows whenever she’s trying to communicate in her cat form. She has done it once or twice as a human but only when she’s exhausted and forgets which form she’s in.

Zuko and her have sat down though and gone through every sound she can make as a cat then tested to see if she could make the same noise as a human.

I read your fic "The Cat Princess" and I love it. I had an idea and hope(d) if you would like to write it. 👉👈

When Azula was 2 or 3 she would shift and curious as kids/kittens are would explore her surroundings.

One morning Ursa and Azula were in playroom. Ursa left to do something quickly and left CatAzula in playroom. But playroom door was not closed properly. She looked into corridor being intrigued with all the hustle and bustle went out started exploring playing with whatever she saw. In meantime Ursa came back looking frantically for Azula when she saw the door started to panic. Calling for Azula but getting no reply.

However Azula saw Ursa coming and crouched tiny butt wiggling readying to jump out of her hiding place and onto Ursa. When Azula jumped onto Ursa and she shrieked from shock. Relieved but with pounding heart she picked up Azula who shifted back giggling loudly tiny body shaking from laughing. Ursa hugging and kissing her tiny tod with amusement.

From then Azula would try and sometimes successfully scare Ursa, but usually Ursa saw her tiny kitten readying to jump and played as if she was shocked just to hear and see her tod laughing and playing. This became a play thing just between Azula and Ursa.

I love this idea! Azula, especially when she's still a toddler, doesn't have the best hunting skills. She's a tiny black kitten who thinks no one can see her as long as she moves slowly enough. Ursa doesn't have the heart to crush her daughter though so she acts shocked because it makes Azula happy. It's only when she gets older that Azula realizes her mom knew the entire time.
