Photographing Cars

Hey there. Sorry I've not posted for a while.

I've actually kept myself busy throughout August with various trips and photography as I took almost a month off work just to do my thing.

One of the shoots I did last month was a car shoot.

There were some shots with the driver but he may not want to be seen all over Social Media so I've left those out from this post.

So, this shoot was done at sunrise up in an area in North Yorkshire.

I was looking to capture a winding road with a forest backdrop.

The idea being, that the car shot is a high powered sports saloon which is comfortable taking in the winding roads of the forest away from most civilization whilst remaining somewhat practical and civilised.

If you're interested, the car is a BMW 335d Motorsport.

My considerations were the quality of natural light. Hence why I chose sunrise for the Golden Hour. I'd checked the map to see where East is, because that's where the sun rises. I'd also checked the weather forecast and we had a two hour window of dry weather to get the shoot done.

I also considered auxiliary lighting. I class myself as an all light shooter. I've been really lucky over the years and I've learned from some of the best people in the Industry (thank you, you guys know who you are).

So I am extremely grateful to the them for sharing their invaluable experience and knowledge. Anyway. This means that I have several options I can use to add light to the scene. From reflectors to Speedlights. That day I used 3 X Speedlights, lighting stands and shoot through umbrellas. The only problem I had on the day is that the wind got up and so the stands kept being blown over at our location. I used GN60 Speedlights and three of them at sunrise easily had enough power for what I needed.

The great thing about this set up is that it's fairly portable and runs from batteries. It allows me to get great lighting in most places.

I shot mainly on a Sony a7ii using an adapted 17-40mm Canon L series, lens which worked a treat. An excellent lens in my opinion.

The warp drive style shots from the back seat of the car were shot using the same lens. The visual effects are all optical and no Photoshop blurring.

I was up at 4.30am that morning for the shoot which was the only bit I didn't enjoy as I am not an early morning kinda guy (Lol).

We were on site by 5.45am with a sunrise time of 0610hrs.

I do my research before I use a location. If it's not feasible for me to visit the location for a reccie beforehand, I research it on Google Street view and try to look at the location from varying angles.

It's not perfect but it's way better than going in blind.

I don't often do this type of shoot, but it's something I would be happy to do again and more often if there was more of a market for it in the UK.

There are some absolutely stunning locations in the UK, never more than an hours drive from whichever city you live in around the country. I know, we're very lucky!
