One of the numerous things that i as a nostalgic long-time Magic collector miss is the variety a lot of old lands had in their frames. The coloured edging was often somewhat arbitrary and unrelated to the land itself, seemingly tied to the set rather than the land’s abilities or mana affiliation. And a few lands, like the ones from Mirage and Visions, as well as the original duals, even had different backgrounds in their text boxes.
They probably got rid of these in the name of uniformity, as they did with so many of Magic’s other interesting quirks, but with the efforts they’re going to lately to make collectible premium cards, maybe things like this that throw homogenization to the wind will come back into style. Obviously not the old borders, but just... interesting variation that seems arbitrary and makes you stop to consider it.
These variations added a lot of character to lands that standardized modern frames lack.
