Summary:

Bucky is a jaded millennial with a lot on his plate.

There's a dead guy in a museum who is definitely his doppelganger. He’s plagued by nightmares that could make a grown man weep, hates the cold more than anything, and if he doesn’t phone his sister at least once a week, she calls his friends to ask after him. To top it all off, lucky in love is just not a term used to describe him.

Amnesiac, though? That’s apt.

Or the one where Bucky is a journalist missing the first thirty years of his life. Captain America is straight up in love with his dead doppelganger. And the US government has been infiltrated by a secret organization hell bent on world domination.

Summary: The Winter Soldier escaped from Hydra in the early eighties, and since then he's helped SHIELD to get rid of their parasite, taken over the Russian and Irish mobs in Brooklyn, used his influence to make the borough safer, and reclaimed the name James (albeit not Barnes, and definitely not Bucky). By 2012 he was leading a very comfortable and content life, if not exactly happy one.

Everything changed when Captain America was found in ice, and suddenly there was a possibility for James to find happiness again. For once, the biggest obstacle on his path was himself.

“I know. But I want you to have it. Open the lid.”

Bucky shakes his head but does as Steve asks. He covers his mouth with his hand when he sees what’s inside and looks up at Steve, shaking his head. He closes his eyes and puts the compass on the blanket beside him before holding his face in his hands and leaning over to cry. Steve wraps his arms around Bucky and waits.
