Not to be too gushy and take silly gay aliens too seriously, but the fact that I get to type the phrase 'canon Garashir' is so powerful. Especially after decades of two very clearly queer characters being denied their personhood and forced to fit into a heteronormative mold that was so clearly ill fitting, all for the sake of the comfort of bigots. It's such a win and it is more gratifying than I can put to words. And the fact that they're allowed to be happy and comfortable and get to contribute in such meaningful ways withing their lives. It really does feel like every queer and neuro-divergent person who ever saw themselves in such rich and complex characters is now getting told "We really do see all of you. And you deserve a happy ending too."
I know I'm late to the party...but I just happened to be looking through some old AO3 comments...and...and...I...called it? I called it...I CALLED IT! It may have been a weird alternate universe hologram thing but I'm taking it!
I'd ike to thank Elemental_Queen, don't know if you have a Tumblr but hit me up if you do, 'cause honey, you called it too! There'll be no need for that riot!

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Julian Bashir/Elim Garak
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Hologram Julian Bashir/Alternate Universe Elim Garak
âThankfully, Julianâs enhanced brain was able to comprehend quantum realities with ease. He was having a harder time accepting that Bashir was married.â
In which a hologram saves the First Splinter timeline.
[read on ao3]
The first time Julian found himself face-to-face with Bashir in a holosuite, he thought it was one of Felixâs hilarious practical jokes.
The holographic Bashir was wearing a fake Starfleet medical uniform, with grey where the teal should be, and was smiling at him with an oddly nervous look in his eyes.
âNot Felixâs best work, honestly,â Julian said, staring down the imposter. âWhat, are you here to proposition me? Offer me a speech on my undying love for myself?â
Bashir made a face. âNothing like that, old chum - Iâm here to save your universe.â

Once he accepted Bashirâs explanation, such as it was, Julian found it pretty easy to accept Bashirâs place in his life. Sure, his friends thought he was vain and self-obsessed to have a portable holographic emitter with his own likeness, but he didnât have many friends anyway.
But after Starfleet Medical, he would become a renowned doctor - famous enough to become the template for a medical hologram! - and important enough to his reality to need specifically protecting by his alternate holographic self.
Thankfully, Julianâs enhanced brain was able to comprehend quantum realities with ease. He was having a harder time accepting that Bashir was married.
âYouâre marriedâŠas a hologram?â
Bashir shot him a look. âYou know I canât talk about that.â
âYouâre wearing a wedding ring! And I checked your data files - the ring code was a later addition to the original source. I wasnât married when you were designed, but you are married, soââ
âIt doesn't always turn out the same in every universe,â Bashir said, with the sing-song quality that implied he had said this many times before.
How many universes had Bashir saved before this one? Was Julian the key in every single one? Well, he would just have to do his duty, thatâs all. He owed it to the multiverse.
But first he would find out more about this marriage.
âWhat isnât the same?â he asked, innocently.
Bashir looked exasperated. âSometimes, weâre not there together, and sometimes heâs tooâŠdifferent. Iâm not supposed to be telling you this!â
He. Well, that was a surprise. Julian had always pictured marrying a woman, fathering children - but perhaps that was his motherâs dream, not his. Besides, there were many ways to make a family.Â
âStarfleet?â
Bashir squirmed. âSometimes.â
âHuman?â
No response. Not Human, then. Julian had always been a bit of a xenophile.
âA doctor?â
âRarely. My husband is, but I don't know of any others. Look, there isnât much to worry about in this stretch, so IâllâŠleave you to it for now.â
Then he disappeared and didnât return until the night before finals, murmuring into Julianâs half-sleeping ear that he needed to throw at least one question on the exam.
Neuroanatomy wasnât his forte, anyway.

Julian wouldâve chosen Starbase Deep Space Nine even without Bashirâs recommendation. It was frontier medicine, a chance to make a difference in the aftermath of a war, a proving ground before he secured his first five-year mission.
Then he met Elim Garak.
After flirting with the gorgeous Cardassian spy - and making an utter tit of himself in the process - he activated Bashir in his quarters.
âIs it him?â he asked.
Bashir rolled his eyes. âAre you going to ask that about every attractive alien man?â
Julian smiled triumphantly. âSo you do find him attractive?â
Bashir snorted. âIâm based on you. What do you think?â
After that, Julian gave up asking. Mostly because he didn't really want to know for certain who he might marry in the future - why spoil the surprise?
Also because he had seen that soft look in Bashirâs eyes, beneath the bluster, and was afraid such softness simply wasnât for him.

After Luther Sloan captured him, Julian carefully concealed Bashirâs emitter inside Kukalaka and never took it out again.

âThirteen years!â
âMy love, do forgive me - I couldnât exactly destroy Kukalaka, could I?â
âIt isn't as if you couldn't repair him!â
âI am just a plain and simple surgeon, not a tailor.â
âAs you have said, many many times before, you are not just anything!â
Julian was dreaming. How else could he explain hearing Garak arguing with another Julian Bashir?
A memory stirred - another Bashir, in the wrong uniform - no, a later uniform, one Julian couldnât possibly have known about untilâ
The memories hit him like a flood, choking him, drowning him, threatening to pull him under like a riptide.
âHeâs sinking again!â
His own voice, but not him. Like a recording of an echo of another life.
âLet me try.â
âOh, I donât think so.â
Garak. Two Garaks, but that one was definitely his. If only he could open his eyes! If only he could see him again.
If only he hadnât left Garak behind, to go withâ
Another wave of despair, of raw anguished memory, but strong hands held onto his shoulders.
âJulian, my dear, I am right here.â
Julian opened his eyes, and he saw, as if for the first time, Elim Garak.
He tried to speak, but the words stuck in his throat, behind his eyes. He loved and hurt so deeply that it was like his chest was cracked open, forbidding him to breathe, to live.
Bashir was speaking. âElim, we really should be going.â
âI wouldnât do that if I were you,â Garak said, while never taking his eyes away from Julian. âYou will explain yourselves.â
âOh, I donât think we will,â said the other Garak, the one that Bashir called âElimâ.
It was so obvious that it hurt, and yet Julian tried to shut it out anyway. All the love and pain of it.
But he couldnât deny it any longer. Not when she - when Sarina had died, and Garak had stayed.
âItâs all right,â Julian rasped, voice rough from disuse. âI know him, them. Theyâre here to save the timeline.â
Garak blinked at him. âSaving you will save the timeline?â
âThe captain was fuzzy on the details,â Bashir said, brightly. âIâm sure youâll work it out.â
âDonât worry about it at all,â Elim put in. âWe wonât let them pop the bubble.â
And then the room was quiet, with only Garakâs breathing and his, the tsunami of memory and feeling held back only by the grip Garak had on him.
âHe said it doesn't always turn out the same in every universe,â Julian blurted, then wondered why heâd said it. Still making a tit of himself, even after all these years.
âWhat doesn't?â
âHis marriage. TheirâŠtheir marriage. Sometimes itâs different. SometimesâŠâ
Sometimes it doesnât work out at all.
But they were together in this universe, and Garak wasn't âtoo differentâ, was he? The resemblance had been uncanny, even just hearing his voice.
âThey are married. The Cardassian Starfleet doctor and the hologram of you.â Garak sounded like he might be concussed.
Julian knew the feeling. âWaitâŠStarfleet?â
His head was spinning, and not just for suddenly finding himself awake to the world for the first time in too long.
âAs much as I would like to speculate on how our counterparts came to be married and our solemn responsibility to save the universe,â Garak said, âI would first like to say: welcome home, my dear. I missed you.â
âIâm not going to let you miss me again,â Julian said, fervently. âLet's get married.â

âAfter we restored the equilibrium of the timeline, the rest justâŠfell into place.â
Boimler regarded his two officers with narrowed eyes.
âYou got Bashir and Garak to hook up, didnât you?â
âIt is the most efficient strategy,â Elim said, gravely.
âOne might call it a cardinal event.âÂ
Boimler sighed and ticked another universe off the list.
As soon as I watched the episode I went into a frenzy to draw this.
(Text can be seen better with brightness turned up but it reads âthe kind of trust that transcends universesâ and âitâs all true, especially the liesâ)
Also, this is my oldest piece of garashir fanart, from like, 2020. Forgive me for this. I know itâs basically incomprehensible, so also letâs hear it for 4 years improvement.
But hopefully you get a grasp on how much these two mean to me.
