Naturally, the first thing the exiled princess did was get to her car and drive behind the ambulance, the thought of her beloved Cameron there and alone killed her inside. She could not lose her detective like that. No, especially when Trystan counted with endless resources. She’d bring her Cameron even if the Drakovian scaffold was next for her.

Trystan had worked and been with many people, but no one quite like Cameron. There was something about them that left Trystan wanting more each time they interacted. And now that she could lose them, it felt like a pressure that Trystan couldn’t get out of her system.

Please God, she begged, take me. Take Eleanor. Take Tony. Anybody save them. I’ll do anything. I beg you.

She wasn’t even religious, but for Cameron, she would.

The moment the ambulance stopped at the urgencies gates, Trystan raced behind Cameron’s bed. Running behind their bed, she looked at them, their beautiful brown eyes closed, eerily still, and that terrified Trystan.

They were about to enter the room when the doctors stopped Trystan “Where are you taking them?! I demand to be there!”

“Are you family of the patient, ma’am?”

“No, but—,”

“I am afraid that you must wait for family members to arrive. We shall call the person in their emergency list and hope they answer.”

Seething, Trystan hollered “I am Princess Trystan Thorne of Drakovia and I demand to be in the room!” Her eyes were watering, trembling of impotence, but the doctor didn’t budge.

“Sorry, but unless you’re directly family, I’m afraid that you’ll have to wait.”

An idea struck. Cameron would kill her, but it was worth a shot.

“Not to mention their fiancée.” The nurse stopped, and Trystan smiled to herself “how will you explain to them that their beloved is not there, hm?”

“Oh! Uh… you… should’ve mentioned that earlier. In that case, follow me.”

Trystan waited, and after what it seemed like a long time, Cameron came out fine, simply asleep. Trystan checked their pulse, and sighed of relief. It was stable. They’d be fine.

For the next hours, Trystan watched how Cameron breathed, their chest raising and falling, a constant reassurance that all of this had been but a scare, and that they’d be fine. Jimmy came a while later, panting and demanding to see how Cameron was. He did raise an eyebrow at Trystan being their fiancée, but said nothing, as in an understanding that now that was between Trystan and Cameron.

The hours passed, and Trystan felt like she was being slowly buried alive, hopeless, barely breathing. Cameron was fine, but asleep nevertheless.

“Please,” she whispered, “please, Cameron, wake up. Wake up and call me an idiot. Berate me. Roll your eyes at me, glare at me, yell at me for lying my way here, but please, come back to me. Come back to me, Detective Rose.”

Jimmy frowned “I don’t know how I’ll pay for this. Cameron has their own money, but it doesn’t do much.”

“Money’s no trouble for me. Let me pay for it.”

“I can’t ask you to do that—,”

“Mr. Rose,” she hissed, more to herself than anyone else “Cameron was with me when it happened. A life was on the line. A case was to be solved. They were under my protection, and I failed to do so. They could’ve died, and I wasn’t there. Please, let me be useful, or I swear to God that I will explode.”

Jimmy, reading the expressions on the princess’ face, relented. He sighed “Very well, kiddo. But, as a retired old dog, some things are out of your control. You couldn’t have predicted what would happen, even if you are as powerful.”

“I could’ve done something. Rush back with them. Wait for them. Stay with them.”

“You got them out, did you not?”

“Barely.”

“Barely is better than not at all. Some are not so lucky and have no option but to watch their partner die on the job. I speak from experience.”

Trystan flinched. What a terrifying thought, carrying Cameron’s dead body in her arms. Unmoving. Still. Cooling down by the minute. Getting up abruptly, she shook her head, brushing off such a grotesque thought and, without a word, went out to get some coffee.

On the way there, Trystan spotted Luke, Ruby and Mafalda in the waiting room. They all rushed towards the princess, showering her in questions about Cameron’s state.

“Quiet, not all at once!” Mafalda chided.

Nodding to Mafalda in gratefulness, Trystan cleared her throat “Cameron’s fine. They’re now unconscious. They don’t seem gravely hurt, most of the damage is by smoke breathing. They haven’t woken up yet, but I know they will. Soon.”

They all nodded, hopeful. By God, they would. They had to. Or else Trystan would burn the entirety of New York to the ground and not even bat an eye. Her predecessors had done far more gruesome things for love--.

She shook her head. Love? She barely knew them! But… it also felt like she did. Something about them just clicked, like they had been made custom made for her tortured, troubled and perfectly disastrous and grotesque heart.

Typing a few buttons on her phone, she quickly got delivered some potent alcohol to clear her head. Rubbing her temples, she pondered on what she was feeling, and how different it had been when she was with Juliana. It was nothing like that. It was different. Rare. Special. Raw. Real. Secure.

It wasn’t love. Not yet. But it could very well be. With Cameron, it was more than possible. Something inside Trystan wanted it to be.
