I always teach classes with walnut ink, because it’s a great and reliable ink that helps make life easy for beginners, and more importantly, it’s easy to clean up and I want my venues to let me come back 😅 But this crazy combination of gold powder and pink gouache is making me never want to use anything else 😍😍😍 Do you think @brighthq.venue would mind if I stained everything in their building bright pink on Saturday? Just a little? Pink looks great in a conference room, right? . (I’m joking, if you’re reading this, @brighthq.venue 😅 Please don’t ban me, I love you!) . I have been working on a commission in this navy gouache over the weekend and there’s just something magical about the way it dries. I don’t do enough commissions in formal copperplate; I wish I did more, because there’s something very satisfying about those neat lines and smooth curves. Mostly I work in a more informal and individual - although still traditional - style ... which I also love 😅 . But regardless of style, after days of doing only digital calligraphy or none at all, it’s a joy to put pen back to paper. This nib is giving me trouble but not enough to give up on it; the paper has been touched too much to hold ink nicely; the gouache keeps drying on the nib in the summer heat; and I’m happy as a clam with it all 😍😍😍😅😅 #calligraphynerd! . I asked YouTube how to do this so I’m totally an expert now. . No, look, I’m flat out this week, but last night I couldn’t sleep at all. I tossed and turned and then I thought, oh my gosh; I have a Dremel, I could make myself a custom Parallel Pen, right now! I could!! So ... I got up and did. . That’s not weird, is it? 👀 I just had letters burning in my head and I knew I couldn’t sleep till I wrote them! . I also made myself a scroll pen and it worked out great! I’m very excited about all of this! . ... but please don’t try this at home. I wore safety gear and I asked the Internet how to do it, but I’m not an expert and I’m often the Bad Idea Queen, so do as I say, not as I do, right? 😶😶 sometimes you just gotta hack a pen and to heck with consequences; other times ... if you’re not comfortable using power tools and you’re not doing it safely, things can go very wrong. I remember being really pleased with the version on the left when I wrote it a few years ago. And I remember being really pleased with the version on the right when I wrote it in March this year. And now I can see all the flaws in that one, too, and I’m ready to try again. . Like I keep saying to people - I didn’t “learn calligraphy.” I study calligraphy - present tense. There’s always something to aspire to. I teach classes and spend half the time talking about how amazing other calligraphers who I aspire to be like are 😂 The study of calligraphy is a lifelong journey and I expect to still be taking classes when I’m eighty.
