________
snow whips past your face as you laid on your belly in the russian mountains, sniper rifle pressed into your shoulder. your cheek rested on the side of the barrel, eye focusing as well as you could with having no feeling in your fingers. your com radio was strapped to your ear and eerily quiet as your target came into view.
you were hired on to the 141 team as a speciality snipper, your reputation of quick and precise work proceeded you. the whole team heard tales of your seemingly impossible shots around the base and were quick to welcome you in. well…almost all of them did at least.
ghost was an anomaly, strong and stoic in the team meetings. like a persistent shadow you couldn’t shake, a looming figure that sent a chill down the back of your neck. you’d never even seen the man’s face and yet, it captivated your entire being. they did say curiosity killed the cat after all.
however, at this moment, you felt like the cold would kill you first. “target in position,” you called out over the radio, awaiting the captain’s order, “i have a clear shot. say the word, cap.” your finger floated over the trigger with a comfortability learned from years of use.
“take the shot as soon as-“ the captain didn’t finish his sentence before the target was on their back, a pool of blood seeping into the pure white snow. “smartass,” was the next words from your captain. “now get back to the safe house before this storm gets worse.”
“nice shot, k9.” gaz’s voice crackled over the radio, the wind making it hard to hear clearly. “almost thought you wouldn’t make it.” you rolled your eyes and shook your head. “ye of little faith, gaz.”
-
you trudged through the piles of snow that felt as though they grew with each step. your body was weak, the cold stinging your fingers and nose. you had been completely suited up for the weather, but you could still feel each gust of wind as through all your heavy layers. you could see the safe house getting closer, but you couldn’t will your body forward.
“fucking god…..few more feet.” you mumbled to yourself as you lifted your foot out of the snow and forward. what you couldn’t see was early stages of hypothermia developing. your nose was turning purple, your eyes being almost frozen shut from tears cause by the wind. your mind slowly began to lose itself as well. you pushed forward.
you finally made it to the safe house door and pushed it open with all the remaining energy you had. the door swung open and all the men jumped up from the sudden movement. there you stood, covered in snow and it looked like you were about to collapse. the only thing you could make out behind your drooping eyes was the masked man. “ghost….” was the last thing you called out before collapsing.
-
when you woke again, you were in a bed. you had a pair of sweatpants and hoodie that clearly didn’t belong to you. as soon as you woke, the chills set in. your teeth chattered and goosebumps lined your arms. you gasped at the sensation and suddenly, ghost was in your line of vision.
“i know i know…here.” he quietly soothed you as he covered you in another blanket. “you’ll be okay…i’m here.” you whimpered as your hands, shaking and a light purple, reached out for the man. you couldn’t think properly, feeling as though your brain was lagging 30 seconds. the masked man soon lifted the blanket and slid in beside you, filling you with a warmth you could feel deep in your belly.
your hands desperately grabbed at his shirt as you buried yourself as deep as you could into his chest. his arms wrapped you up and his hands rubbed soothing circles on your back.
“you kept calling for me…” he said, his tone indicating a level of surprise and hesitation. “i thought you didn’t like me.” he chuckled to himself as you shook your head hard. “easy k9…you passed out from hypothermia, take it easy.” he reminded you as you inhaled his sent. “i don’t…hate you…never have….just nervous around…you.” the amount of energy required for you to speak almost drained you right then and there. he looked like he wanted to say more, but didn’t.
some time past before he spoke up again. “why do they call you k9?” you lifted your head, a small smile forming as you recalled the memory. your lips still numb as you gasped out an answer. “told every…one in basic…i’m great with…animals….got bit by a dog on….my first mission.”
a hearty laugh came from the man. a genuine laugh that made you squeeze your thighs together as you felt the vibrations in his chest.
“that’s incredibly funny.” he said firmly before looking down at you again. “why do you….wear the mask?” you gently touched his cheek. his eyes hardened as he looked away from you.“protection.”
you still must be out of it, ghost thought as your fingers traced the pattern of the skull. “i bet…you’re pretty.” you said as firm as you could. your fingers trailed down his jaw as his expression softened. “you’re the pretty one k9..”
“(y/n).” you corrected, pushing your fingers under his mask and felt along his jaw. it clenched, but he made no moves to push you away. “(y/n).” he said, your name rolling off his lips beautifully. “i like hearing you say my name…” you whispered as you curled back into his chest.
“simon.” he whispered back, barely loud enough that you almost missed it. “simon…” you giggled, his name coming off almost as a prayer, a poem you’d recite till the end of time. he’d do anything to hear you say it again. his chest tightened as your fingers moved absentmindedly towards his chin, still under the mask.
“simon…i’m cold.” you whined, interlocking your legs with his, trying to absorb as much heat he had to offer you. “i know…i got you.” his eyes were enchanting, deep pools that held an expression you’d never seen on him before. an expression that said he wouldn’t let you go.
the two of you shared a few more moments of eye contact before simon pushed all of his anxiety to the back of his head. he pulled his mask up just below his nose before pulling you in for a kiss, his hand cupping your cold cheek, holding you close to him. you felt like you had whiplash; here was your lieutenant, the one who had a secret crush on, kissing you.
when you two finally separated, he had a wild look in his eyes. one that said he never wanted to stop kissing you. it was overwhelming. you wish you could do it for a lifetime.
