Calixtlahuaca, Mexico, photographed in 1935 by archaeologist Bodil Christensen. Calixtlahuaca translates to “house of the prairie” in Nahuatl and was inhabited for an extensive period of time, with hunter-gatherer settlements dating to 3000 BC and monumental architecture dating to AD 1100 - 1520. The city housed many ethnic groups including the Otomi, Matlatzinca, Mazahua, and Toltec, and was eventually conquered by the Aztec in AD 1510. Calixtlahuaca
Fue uno de los asentamientos más importantes en el Valle de Toluca o Matalcingo; su nombre en lengua náhuatl significa “Lugar de casas en la llanura”, proviene de ixtlahuatl, “llanura” y calli “casa." Este nombre se lo dieron los mexicas en alusión a la cantidad de poblados que conformaban el área del asentamiento matlatzinca.
