Calixtlahuaca, Mexico, photographed in 1935 by archaeologist Bodil Christensen. Calixtlahuaca translates to âhouse of the prairieâ in Nahuatl and was inhabited for an extensive period of time, with hunter-gatherer settlements dating to 3000 BC and monumental architecture dating to AD 1100 - 1520. The city housed many ethnic groups including the Otomi, Matlatzinca, Mazahua, and Toltec, and was eventually conquered by the Aztec in AD 1510.
