Hey not to detract from what you said in that AO3 donation post, but they do pretty explicitly lay out what they do with their money on the website, no need to speculate. It’s dumb as hell that people with disposable income will continue to donate to a goal two or three times over reached and not :o) yknow :o) something important :o) really makes you think
hey, anon! don't worry about it. i appreciate the correction, thank you for bringing it up to me 🤍 i hadn't realised that until now. also, definetly agree with you.
i went to check it on their donation page and, as you mentioned, they say that the money goes to support "all of the OTW's works, including:
- ao3, a non-profit, non-commercial archive for transformative works
- preservation of fanworks and fan history through Fanlore and Open Doors
- legal advocacy works to protect fans from commercial exploitation and legal challenge
- innovative scholarship on fanworks and fan practices through Transformative Works and Cultures"
so, i made sure to put in italics the three things i wanted to approach, though.
1. they mention four out of the multiple things the money go to, they don't have a detailed list and the only other explanation is on the ao3 page before the actual donation page, where they mention buying bandwidth and servers
2. besides what i mentioned above they never say what the money goes for regarding ao3. they don't mention moderation, prevention of certain topics, to make sure that people follow their code of content (which is "The Content and Abuse Policy covers procedures, spam and commercial promotion, threatening the technical integrity of the site, copyright, plagiarism, personal information and fannish identities, harassment, illegal and non-fanwork content, and ratings and warnings.") and they do mention not prescreening for content, which... for an archive who's getting this amount of funds, does not go. it's not something you do. you have a legal team, bunch of profits and you don't... check what's being put in your website unless users report it? what kind of fuckery is this? it's their responsability to know what is and isn't on their website and make proper, strict rules about it that are easy to find and frequently reminded.
3. the legal advocacy part. as i said on my post, part of the money do go towards defending those writers.
lastly, i went to the OTW page to see if they say what they spend their money on and here's what they say: "the OTW uses funds to purchase goods and services that cannot be provided by its volunteers, such as expenses including the purchase of software and server space to create and mantain the archive. administrative expenses include a variety of items typical to a nonprofit [...]". which, sure, no one is asking them to give us the full report but... the amount of money they got this time was two or three times what they needed. and i think it's extremely sketchy how little they are letting us know. i have digged through the OTW a couple of times and i simply get either very suspicious, shady vibes or i get confused about the mix of transparency and abiguous info they give.
that's it. i'm sorry for hijacking your ask to say all of this and thank you for the ask and the info!
