Anyway, this is such a fabulous piece of writing; it haunts me with possibilities and deep thoughts when I least expect it.  I still think about it occasionally; I actually read it out loud to my husband once because It. Is. So. Freaking. Brilliant. :D  So thank you for writing this piece, and I'd love to know what you were thinking about when you wrote it!

Flicker.

I had never done anything like the Crossroads AU before, and was enjoying the hell out of it--the surrealism, the sensuality, the possibilities. I knew right away that if I tried to do a traditional narrative story in this AU, it would fall apart immediately; it thrived in that weird space, when you’re not sure whether you’ve dreamed something or not. I don’t remember if I’d already figured out that there were going to be multiple cycles of Yuuri and Victor being the devil, but I think that the animation of the first ficlet had already happened, and I adored the flickering street lamps that Shan had included in it, and I think that’s where this particular entry came from.

The thing about horror is that sometimes it’s a matter of how little you should say, rather than how much. I think Flicker demonstrates that very well. The horror doesn’t come from gore, or from existential dread, or from a frightening monster; it comes from all the questions left unanswered, all the things left unsaid, all the unknowns surrounding you in the dark. That, I think, is some of the most effective horror in fiction, and it’s something I’ve really embraced when I’ve tackled the genre.

I want to clarify something about the original Japanese dialogue first…

Morooka commentates at CoC that Yuuri is about to complete the “highest technical difficulty program.” He uses the word “kakkou” (past) here rather than “rekishi” (history) like when he talks about Phichit making history in ep7.  Now, this “kakkou” could mean “the past in general,” OR it could refer to this SP being “the most-difficult-to-date program” for Yuuri personally. 

Chris’ preceding comment on Yuuri being completely different from previous years (“kyounen made” = through last year/the prior year being the last), and Morooka’s later comments on “a new Yuuri being born” as well as using “kakkou” again in “katsuki yuuri ni totte kakkou saikou level deshou” (lit. “past highest level” – better translated as “the best he’s ever been” or “a higher level than in the past”), make me think that the “highest technical difficulty of any past program” refers to Yuuri’s past programs specifically. But well, Japanese sports TV is dramatic, so it might be “HIGHEST DIFFICULTY IN HISTORY!”*

Regardless of time frame or skaters, I think what he’s expressing here is that Yuuri’s program is of the utmost difficulty because of the layout – he backloads his jumps – NOT the point value itself. That would be a different term like 基礎点 kisoten (BV), or  技術点 gijutsuten/技術要素点 gijutsuyousoten (TES). And besides, J.J. just skated in Skate Canada, likely had a higher BV, and Morooka would be aware of this.

In regards to breaking records, what you’re asking instead is technical difficulty in terms of points – this would be the Base Value (BV) of a program where you calculate the raw elements without the extra GOE or the PCS. There are three points here to cover:

At the GPF, Chris with his BV of 52.33 is actually slightly higher than Yuuri’s 52.26 BV. Yuuri’s previous planned jumps made his BV 50.06 points, and Chris’ former BV was 46.61, both of which are lower than J.J.’s 51.16 BV. Basically, J.J. had the highest BV until Chris changed his program.

Just because a BV is higher doesn’t mean you’ll break a world record (WR). Some years you simply don’t see a world record broken.This has to do with fulfilling a program’s potential score. 

For example, Yuzuru’s SP last season (2016-17) “Let’s Go Crazy” had a higher BV than his world-record-breaking SP from the year before (2015-16) “Chopin Ballade No. 1 in G Minor.” Even so, he didn’t manage to break his own WR. This is because, while he had a harder program and landed his jumps, he didn’t fulfill the total amount of points the program could potentially earn (BV+GOE+PCS). His GOE and PCS weren’t enough to beat his near-perfect skate from the season prior. (More on this below.)

Along this vein, Nathan Chen had the highest BV in the field last season with 53.15 points, but he earned lower GOEs for his jumps and his PCS isn’t as high yet. Thus, no broken record even when he skated cleanly at 4CC.

You don’t need the highest BV to break a record - just a high enough potential total score to put you above the last record, and then fulfilling it. This is basically what Victor was saying in the onsen in ep4.

Looking at Yuzuru again, this season at Autumn Classic International 2017 he broke the former WR – which he set almost two years ago in Dec 2015 – with a program that had nearly identical elements to the old record-breaking program. 

His record-breaking Short Program BV in 2015-16 was 47.45, in 2016-17 his SP BV was 49.75, and the watered down version of his 2017-18 SP has a BV of 49.51. You can see that it’s a slightly lower BV than “Let’s Go Crazy” last year, and much lower than Nathan’s, yet he broke the record because he nearly maxed out the GOE and PCS.
