I believe that domestic building regulations contribute to unaffordable housing. Yes, safety standards need to be enforced. However, forcing people to build large, expensive homes to maintain aesthetics and $$ value of an area is the issue.
Imagine if the land owner could build a dwelling of their choice to actually suit their needs. Even if this meant a simple 2 bedroom kit home which left ample room for a yard and a manageable $$ outlay. Naturally the building would have to meet safety standards. This isn’t about allowing tents, shanties, long term caravans, portaloos, no plumbing, shipping containers or unsafe DIY creations to fill the suburbs and threaten health.
Could more people afford to access housing? Smaller homes take less $$ to run and maintain. Yard space could allow some self sufficiency to happen.
Am I just being too idealistic and simplistic here......?
