but in actuality, it’s Stiles who pursued Derek. Stiles who’s calling the shots. Stiles, who equal parts turns Derek on and intimidates him just a little. Stiles who rolls his eyes at people who have so much to say about his and Derek’s relationship but truly don’t know jack shit. they think the worst of Derek and Stiles tells them, “you couldn’t be any further from the truth.”

if Stiles ever feels comfortable or safe enough, he doesn’t mind telling people where or how him and Derek met. unfortunately, a lot of the times Stiles ends up telling them it’s none of their business because he knows people aren’t genuinely curious, this is just scandal and gossip for them. he knows these very people would turn around and scoff with their friends about what a cliche it is for an older gay man to bed some barely legal twink, sugar baby accusations, making off comparisons of them to the characters of ‘call me by your name’. so Stiles shuts it down, doesn’t even give them the chance or enjoyment of beating down or questioning his relationship to Derek.

and Derek doesn’t pull the “he’s mature for his age/has an old soul” or “he makes me feel young,” thing (and he’s not trying to make himself seem or look younger either). there simply was an attraction or instantaneous click between them before Derek even knew how old Stiles was. maybe there was even some hesitation on Derek’s part because he knew what it would look like on the outside world, knew what kind of comments he’d get from his sisters, his mom, his friends. the looks and murmurs he’d receive when he had Stiles on his arm at events. but because Stiles didn’t seem to care what others thought, Derek would try his best to do the same. not let his social anxiety and the judgement of others decide how he should love Stiles.

there may have been some awkwardness when Stiles introduced Derek to his dad. john not at all expecting an older gentleman with obvious years of experience over Stiles. it’d become clear to him that it didn’t matter; Stiles was head over heels for Derek and vice versa. john would quietly pull Stiles aside and maybe admit that he doesn’t fully understand but he supports him, “so long as you two are being safe and kind to one another.” he still pulls the old dad trick of threatening to shoot Derek with a shotgun if he hears of anything bad happening to Stiles.

Stiles would laugh, patting his dad on the shoulder and promising that Derek is sweet and gentle with him, “trust me! he looks all mean and gruff, dad, but he’s such a teddy bear. it’s him you should be protecting from me, if anything!”

anyways… Stiles has terrible vices and Derek wants to fix them. very much in his ”i could fix him,” era (meanwhile, his pack is saying “he could make you worse!”)

Derek finding out Stiles chugs an unhealthy amount of coffee and energy drinks. the energy drinks mostly! finding all the cans Stiles has hidden around his apartment; he’s got a case under his bed, they’re spread out in the fridge hidden behind condiments and leftovers, Stiles keeps two or three in the jeep, finding out Scott keeps a stash in his own apartment. Derek baffled when he finds out Stiles had snuck some into his loft too. “why do you get on your dad about his health when you’re one can away from cardiac arrest?” Derek scolds. Stiles shrugs and says it makes it easier to get through the day, plus he likes the taste. “Stiles, these all taste like battery acid,” Derek tells him before damaging every can.

the day Derek discovers Stiles took up smoking, his eye twitched and a great wave of concern washed over him. he will admit, Stiles looks insanely attractive with a cigarette on his lips but he remembers those ‘smoking kills’ programs they pushed in elementary school. so he yanks the cigarette from Stiles’ mouth, stomping it out and telling him, “smoking is bad for you!” “but it eases my stress!” Stiles whines and Derek responds, “don’t care. take up hiking or find a cozy hobby!” he’s about to walk off but stops, turns around, and shoves his hands in Stiles’ pockets, ignoring Stiles’ squeal as he finds the pack of marlboros and crushes it in his hands. “c’mon, man! cigarettes aren’t cheap!” “all the more reason not to buy them in the first place..”

doesn’t take long for Derek to find out that Stiles has a poor sleep schedule (hence the collection of redbulls and monsters). he comes over at Stiles’ place at 9 o’clock on the dot, pushing Stiles to get ready for bed. “dude, what?! 10 o’clock is so early,” Stiles complains but doesn’t at all protest when Derek shoves him towards the bathroom telling him to shower and brush his teeth. “what? are you gonna read me a bedtime story too?” Stiles jokes and Derek quirks an eyebrow saying, “i might.. if i have to.” Stiles rolls his eyes but jumps in the shower. he smiles around his toothbrush as Derek watches him intently from the reflection in the mirror, arms all crossed and brows furrowed. Derek walks with him to his bed, still watching as Stiles crawls in and under his duvet. “no bedtime story?” Stiles teases. Derek looks around Stiles’ bookshelf, pulling out some textbook about the psychology of serial killers. “ooh my favorite,” Stiles hums, squirming underneath his covers as if he’s getting comfortable. Derek doesn’t even finish a whole chapter, Stiles is already knocked out. the next morning Derek receives a text from Stiles that just says “fuck you.” Derek knows Stiles means it in a playful tone and also notes it’s the first time he gets a text from Stiles at an appropriate time in the morning.

when Derek’s doing his own grocery shopping, he thinks he might as well stock Stiles’ fridge with better foods too. not just frozen meals, beer, and a salad kit that probably hasn’t been touched since it was bought. Stiles opens the door to his apartment, mouth gaping and stammering as Derek pushes his way through with bags of groceries on his arm. “i was gonna go shopping this sunday… you didn’t have to do this at all,” Stiles tells him but Derek shrugs already moving groceries into Stiles’ barren fridge. he cuts up the fruit for Stiles, placing them in small tupperware and going, “snack.” he throws out the salad kit that’s an offputting green but Stiles rolls his eyes before just letting Derek take over the rest of his kitchen. Derek even goes through the trouble of meal prepping one or two dishes. Stiles tastes a small bit and is pleasantly surprised how good it is.

Derek coming over that very same weekend and telling Stiles they’ll be going for a jog. he’s not asking, he’s telling! because he knows, if given the chance, Stiles will hole himself in his room and play PC games for 13 hours straight, only ever getting up to go pee or order pizza. Derek’s not saying he can’t have his videos games but, “you literally need to go outside and touch grass..” Stiles would grumble and complain the first few minutes but then find himself actually enjoying it to the point he’s going to expect this every saturday afternoon.

and maybe at some point it starts to tick Stiles off just a tad little bit! asking Derek what he’s doing, why he keeps doing it, “you’re not my parent!” Derek ducks his head, nodding a few times before saying, “i’m not trying to be your parent. i just want you to be healthy, live long — i just want to take care of you.. to be honest, you’re barely doing a good job of it yourself..” Stiles is stunned silent before it snaps. he points his finger at Derek, grinning knowingly and singing, “you like me! you wanna take care of me cause you like me! oh, you wanna kiss me so bad.”

“took you long enough to figure out,” Derek says.

Derek finally kisses him as he’s been dying to and it’s everything he imagined.
