Hello there! I'm very interested in Buddhist culture and religion. I live in Texas where everyone is Christian mostly but there is a Buddhist temple up the road but I've been scared to go in. I want to but I was afraid that they might not speak English or that I would be rude by intruding. Any advice on where to start or on how to get in touch with someone in tx?
Hi there, and thank you for contacting me! I am so happy that you are becoming in the Buddha-Dharma (Buddha’s teachings). There are so many different types of Buddhist culture, as well as different schools, much like you would find in Christianity.I understand your frustration living in a place dominant in one religion. Do you have a particular type of Buddhism in Mind? There is Theravadan (Also known as Hinayana by the other two schools) which houses Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand and most of East Asia. Then there is Mahayana, also known as Zen, which houses China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Finally, there is Vajrayana, also known as Tibetan Buddhism, which houses Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, Russia, Nepal, Sikkim…pretty much the Himalayas. Each country has their own Buddhist culture, which evolved with every country the Dharma spread too. Do you know what school the Temple belongs too? Does it have a website? What is the name of the Temple (if you would like me to look it up)? Most Temples and Centres will be VERY welcoming to anyone who has developed an interest in Dharma, as this is considered such an amazing thing when new people (especially Westerners) discover Dharma. Unfortunately, some Culturally centred places will be resistant. It’s often advice to avoid culturally centered places, and find places more Dharma centred. These days, most Centres and Temples in the West speak English or have someone on hand who speaks English, but if you can find a phone number or website before going that would be great. If they don’t seem to have public contact information, go ahead and walk in. If there are resident Monks or Nuns, their schedules are very busy, so try to visit between 1pm and 4pm. Do not call them before 10am or after 6pm usually they would be in prayer and meditation before and after these times.A good starting point is books, books are such a wonderful thing. Some good beginner books are: Complete Idiot’s Guide to Buddhism, Heart of Buddha’s Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh, The Buddha and His Teachings by Samuel Bercholz, The Dalai Lama’s Little Book of Buddhism, Buddhist Scriptures by Penguin Publishing, and The Dhammapada: A New Translation of the Buddhist Classic with Annotations edited by Gil Fronsdal. Please keep me updated on your progress, I would love to know how your journey is progressing. Emaho!
This, I do now declare: after investigation— there is nothing among all the doctrines that such a one as I would embrace. Desisting from all theories, the wise one does not enter into dispute in the world. It is because one who sees the Truth, knows it.
