So I've got three weeks before I go away to college. I have always thought of college as simply the next step in any individual's journey. Going to college after high school has always been a given for me, something that I never even questioned. As move in day grows closer and closer, I am beginning to see college as a different entity entirely. College is the first real step into adulthood, at least according to our society and the upper middle class parameters I am set in. It's the first time one lives on one's own, the first time one is solely responsible for one's choices, the first time that an individual can begin to make choices that will define who one is for the remainder of one's life. It's exhilarating, it's terrifying, and it's just overall different than anything else I have experienced up to this point in my life. Again, I have always seen college as a continuation of my life. Even though everything is changing, at the same time, everything would stay the same. Now, with Ben leaving to Canada in three days, and me leaving to MA in 3 weeks, I realize that not everything is gonna stay the same. This thought is scary, but from it another thought was born, one that is far more hopeful: I can reinvent myself. Leaving everything and everyone behind to go on an adventure in a new place gives me the chance to learn more about myself, to change things about myself that I don't particularly like. No one at BU has preconceived notions about me except for the few amazing friends I've made there. This means I don't need to live up to everyone's expectations of who I am. I can change who I am entirely and no one would even know I did it. I can change my style, my hair, my habits, everything. Nothing NEEDS to stay the same. And this realization has brought me great joy. Yes, college is still the next step for me. It's the way I've always thought of my life going, and I can't imagine not attending college. But the me that goes to college can be a new me, a better me, a more interesting, outgoing me. The college me can be a me I can be proud of, and I can't wait for that.
