having just watched a full bat boy & having been relistening to the 2001 ocr album of late im going yeah i only appreciate this show more than ever
one of the vividest things to me when remembering the 2025 toft recording comes from A Home For You. what a song. it's so sweet. the entire show being like this like it's funny & so in earnest. that note from a copy of the script from the creators like "please please please please please please just make sure to perform it in earnest or it doesn't work. don't wink or nudge or be like 'can you imagine' or be Outside With The Audience Looking In & Laughing At. they're funny but it's not funny to them b/c they're in it & it's genuine & life & death. whatever metatheatrics are don't do them" and it's funny & earnest & emotionally-driven all the time.
the vividest things. i can replay this closeup shot like, meredith is singing at first sitting down nearby, then sings while carefully opening the cage door & holding on to that, then you have edgar slowly exiting & starting to look around. & then thinking of cats & their like Sharing A Space & Not Looking Directly At A Person when they're hanging out comfortably (& people like "cats are so rude the way they'll come be in the same place as you & then make a point of not looking at you to be like fuck you") anyway & that edgar is just kind of poking around not actually facing meredith when there's that first moment of him singing the melody to complete her line. & kerry butler meredith making such a like stricken <8c face staring at him in reaction. then that she sings the next line imitating Him & edgar kind of Then looks at her like realizing oh yeah we're doing something together here aren't we? what a song & scene this is. the lyrics & her talking about what he can & should have here wrt Home & Family....
it only occurred to me the other day to compare the Banana's Prayer little song solo scene in bloodsong & that part of Comfort & Joy with edgar which is also him praying. their both being completely funny & in earnest & heartfelt & comedic & dramatic & life & death & Everything.
let me walk among you is killing me more than ever. again what a song. continuously funny & moving. the whole thing is already such a wrenching highest stakes concept like here's edgar putting it all on the line to politely see if maybe, if you're at your best & offer everything, they won't hate & kill you? which they might. while also expressing that desperate yearning for Getting To Live | Like / With All Of You. & it's so funny. & being run over by this song even Before the ending when there's the Funny & Wrenching like everyone going like eugh wait hang on....& edgar reining it in like small polite thank you all for listening / that's. all i have to say....before having to turn around in that most outright desperation yet but please won't someone take my hand let just one person take my hand. more Closeups in the toft 2025 recording absolutely clear that taylor trensch bat boying it was in tears during this number. god i know it. & it never stops being comedic. i.e. Not The Opposite Of Earnest Or Serious it's simply: comedic
riffing off of others' points also gives me something to start saying words about & someone was like "im for Inside Your Heart over Mine, All Mine b/c the latter is cute & sweet but the former is heartbreaking" & someone else saying like way to tone down your camp musical ugh & I'm like. what is Camp about it. what is Camp about anything, to you (is it that it's when something is Bad but on purpose so it's okay / above it actually or is Genre(tm) which usually means Bad but it's on purpose so it's okay / above it actually). but it also had me thinking about like yeah i could say more & god willing i will about the fun of comparing these songs but for now like yeah i think it's a shift to be less Elevated. i think there was also such shifts in the 2025 changes. & i'm not mad b/c i simply think it all worked just fine & b/c then, just like comparing inside your heart vs mine all mine, it's like, i think what the show Is is, well you know, taking an elevated idea like what if there was a half-bat child & then, while absolutely for sure using Genre & Style & thank god for it, being grounded & earnest with it. not Grounded like "wow there's not style & elevation & Genre in here always" "realism" b/c it's a comedy horror scifi greek tragedy musical. but it's talking about Everyday / Real Life still, so. i think it would always move more towards [effectively the same but perhaps more reined in] but then i immediately go well, i mean that to a point, b/c i don't think anyone expects Eternal Edits & rather i think that i would expect Changes to be going in that direction & i don't think it means rejecting the funny genrey elevated musical of it all, b/c it's Bat Boy: The Musical. it's about there being a bat boy. it's not about trying to do peak Realism b/c it's working in a medium where song music singing & dancing are used to convey / express experiences & events. there's not danger like oh no it WAS so wild & playful & now it's so normcore. it's bat boy the musical. here's the greek chorus. there's Pan. we're doing just fine in being fun & weird & wild while it might turn out that emphasizing emotional / character threads might involve grounding things a bit. i don't think i have my fully-cooked ideas & i don't think that's a real thing & i don't think i'm using precise accurate language about those ideas i'm at right now either & i'm thinking more while writing them down but like yeah. there were differences but it's like oh yeah it's so similar it's the same show. & the like Tamping Down Reining In Elevating didn't really feel like oh it's about Losing something & embarrassed to be weird or anything. it's bat boy the musical. & always being playful funny weird elevated. & it's like. i think maybe it's even simply like well it could tend to transfer from the Horror into the Comedy at the same points. which is The Same Thing. genre can neither be created nor destroyed it can only be transformed. & it's like oh yeah this is doing what it was already doing but in a different way. & i like it & then i also think of the other version already known & i like it & we have both & i enjoy inside your heart so much also
