A broiler chicken reaches its slaughter weight after about 40 days. Broiler chickens are therefore not even 1.5 months old when they're slaughtered for meat.
In the 1950s, it took a chicken 100 days to weigh in at its slaughter weight of 1.8 kilograms. Today, a broiler chicken reaches this weight in just around 30 days. The reason for this is that since then broilers have been bred specifically for rapid weight gain.
Free-range broilers will usually be slaughtered at 8 weeks old and organic broilers at around 12 weeks
Broiler chickens have an average lifespan of 7 to 8 years.
