Alix- 3 years, altered female, 58lbs

Alix is a perfect sweetheart who already knows sit, has been housebroken at the shelter, is easy on the leash, and attentive to her handler- she aims to please! Alix is also described as playful and affectionate; in the play yard, she loves chasing around the ball and will give you the occasional zoomie.

In our shelter's care, Alix has been slightly nervous and unsure around other dogs, so we think she'd do best with other gentle and respectful dogs who know when to give her space.

Upon examination, our vets noted that Alix had mild lameness of the left hind leg. Sedated x-rays showed bilateral degenerative joint disease in the hips, so joint supplements and fatty acids are recommended ongoing. She is also currently being treated for an upper respiratory infection and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.

Alix is available immediately for rescue pick-up.

It's Throwback Thursday! Today's memory harkens back to my dog rescuing days, and one of my favorite northern rescues, Bring Home the Brindle.

About seven years ago, one of my main pull shelters was Calhoun County Animal Control. This poorly funded rural shelter served a large county with an even larger homeless pet problem. At the time that I started pulling from there, the shelter was an absolute hell hole. The animals did not receive any vetting unless they had an approved adoption application because euthanasia rates were so high, so parvo and distemper outbreaks were common. Every animal I pulled from there was infested with fleas, worms, and coccidia, and mange was also a frequent problem.

This little pup was a last minute pull for the rescue Bring Home the Brindle in Maryland, just a day before the shelter's big euthanasia day. My memory has unfortunately lost this baby's name, which is rare for me, but she came out of the shelter very wormy and anemic from fleas and stayed with us for a couple of weeks to get healthy and be quarantined. She was a sweet, goofy little thing and had an adopter lined up before she even left Alabama.

I am happy to report that the Calhoun shelter underwent a number of reforms when new leadership was contracted and became the Cheaha Regional Humane Society, which provided better veterinary care and worked closely with other rescues. Unfortunately the humane society lost its contract about a year ago after a political disagreement with the county, and animal control regained control of the shelter - but the new animal control officers are still working with Cheaha's rescue groups and have a significantly lower incidence of illness and euthanasia today.
