So when the words slipped from her lips, seemingly involuntarily, her breath caught in her throat, and her blood turned to ice. If she hadn’t used every ounce of willpower she had to force herself to keep moving, she’d have frozen in place.

“Huh?”

Her gaze immediately dropped to the ground, using her hair cascading around her face to hide the flush pricking her cheeks. “Umm…” She tapped her leg one-two-three, an anxious habit of hers, before nodding to a small stand off to her right. “Almond cake. Have you ever had it before?”

He kept his gaze ahead, not even so much as craning his head even a smidge. “No.”

“It’s pretty good,” she replied, taking a moment to readjust her eye patch. The next sentence came out before she could stop herself. “It kind of reminds me of you.”

Shit.

Sasha’s voice was already blaring in the back of her mind. One time, one time she’d accidentally let her little crush slip, and ever since, it’d been a barrage of banter whenever the two were alone.

“Bri’s got a crush on the captain!” her friend mocked in a sing-song voice. “Bri’s got a crush on the captain!”

“Shut up, Sash!” she’d pleaded, gently swatting her on the arm. “Someone will hear you!”

And when Sasha found out about how “bold” Bria had been, she was never going to let her hear the end of it.

“Tch.” His features never wavered, his quintessential half-lidded-dead-eyes look holding firm. “Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

“Actually, yes,” she affirmed, letting a beat pass before continuing. “It is.”

Her heart was pounding, damn near ringing in her ears, and she was sure everyone around her could hear it. This—being inconspicuous and semi-flirtatious with someone of his rank—felt so wrong. But she couldn’t ignore the warmth blossoming in her chest or the butterflies having a dance party in her stomach. Plus, it was just a harmless conversation.

Nothing wrong with that, right?

“The cake is coated in…well, almonds obviously.” She kicked a small rock as she walked, bouncing it back and forth between her boots like that would somehow help calm her nerves. “What are almonds, Captain?”

“Nuts,” he replied, barely skipping a beat.

She bit her tongue, stifling a laugh. “That’s not exactly the answer I was looking for, but yes. What else?”

“Speed it up, brat,” he ordered, the word ‘brat’—yet another use of it—pulling a heavy eye roll from her. “Where are you going with this?”

“You’re no fun,” she teased. “They’re sharp. When you slice them up, that is.”

He followed up with another signature “tch.” “How flattering.”

“I wasn’t done.” She swallowed hard, suddenly very aware of how parched she was. Was it getting hotter out, or was it just her?

“Like I was saying,” she continued, “they’re sharp. Rough around the edges, rigid, whatever word or phrase you want to use. But that’s just on the outside of the cake. Inside…the inside is surprisingly soft. Sweet.”

As the group came to a stop, she finally garnered the courage to look up at him. “Almond cake is an acquired taste, but people who like it really like it. So yes. It does remind me of you.”

After a moment, his stormy grey eyes met her hazel one, and she fought hard to suppress the sweet heat threatening to return to her cheeks. “And you should be flattered.”

She turned on her heel and followed her comrades inside, the smallest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. His expression remained the same as he watched her—unwavering, strong, and steady.

Watched as she skipped up beside Mikasa, her red and white hair bouncing with every step. Watched as she laughed at a joke she’d only caught half of and linked arms with Christa, bright and lively as ever.

Bria Thompson was just like any other member of the 104th.

i have another baby angel making her first appearance on the blog! say hi to bria (or bri, as most people call her). a profile for her will come at a later date (once i have more of her backstory figured out, but for now) i have a cutesy little drabble as her semi-formal introduction. it's inspired by this tiktok i saw the other day. i guess this is also levi's formal introduction to my blog too lmao. i recently rewatched aot for the first time in a while and i've fallen face-first back into my obsession with it. i hope you love her as much as i do.
