He became more desperate as the days turned into weeks, which turned into months. On one particular evening, his anger overcame him as he yelled into the receiver about her belongings and their house. What the fuck did she want to do? Did she fucking plan on ever coming back for her clothes? Did she expect him to fucking ship them from their house to wherever the hell she was? And, where was she? Where the fuck was she? Why was she doing this to him? To their life? Why the fuck couldnât she get over it and come home? Didnât she realize how much he needed her? Why wouldnât she just talk to him?
This had been the final straw. He had awoken to find a new folder had been shared with him. He opened it and was confronted with what he had become. She had saved his voicemails, his drunken assaults and languid descriptions of their life. She had kept his sobs, his deepest secrets, his desires. Here they were for him to relive. At the end was a memo he hadnât recorded, a message from her, telling him the days she would be coming over to pack her belongings and detailing the furniture in the house that she wanted. She didnât care where he went, but for those three days, he couldnât be there. She told him to sell the house, sheâd take her share of the profits, and if he decided he didnât want to move, he needed to buy her out.
The cracks deepened. The sorrow became overwhelming. The darkness was everywhere. Despite her best attempts, her jovial personality and excitement at preparing for the baby, Florence was at a loss. She didnât know how to make him feel better. She didnât know how to dissuade the guilt she felt at playing a part in their demise.
After six months and one week, Florence had gone into labor. They decided to keep it low key, which is why on a Saturday a month after his daughterâs arrival, he had called her to ask if she would come by and meet his new daughter. He had left it open ended, a few friends stopping by to meet her, no big deal, and maybe could they talk?
She had said she would stop by. After seven months, she still hadnât spoken to him about why she left.
âWell, speaking of, this is Margot,â Florence says, picking up her daughter from the bassinet to the right of the couch. Placing her delicately in her friendsâ arms, Florence sits.
âSheâs really beautiful,â She says, handing her back to Florence. Silence falls as Margot coos. âUm, I canât stay long, just wanted to stop by,â she says standing.
âNonsense, stay for a drink!â Florence says, positioning herself to nurse baby Margot.
âNo, I canât, thank you though, for inviting me,â she quickly hugs Florence and says bye to Margot. She walks swiftly to the foyer and slips her shoes on before heâs grabbing her wrist.
âI have other plans, canât cancel,â She says, free hand moving to wipe a stray tear.
âTalk to me, you havenât spoken to me in seven months, please,â He says.
âWell youâve done enough for the both of us,â She opens the front door and starts walking down the driveway.
âIâm sorry, I donât know how else to say it, Iâm sorry,â He grabs her wrist again in an attempt to turn her around.
âStop apologizing.â She says, tugging her arm out of his grasp. âJust, stop.â
âWhy canât we talk about this? Why canât we share in this? I need you; I love you. I know youâre mad at me, I know youâre upset but Iâve been racking my brain for seven months trying to figure out why you canât handle this. You are my rock; you are my fucking harbor. We have a life together! I need you; I need you,â He says, the crack in his voice giving way to the tears spilling down his cheeks.
âI canât do this,â She says, voice wavering
âWhat donât I get? What donât I understand? I have been trying to understand why you left for months! I keep coming up short. Why would you walk out on us? Why would you abandon me and our dreams? What possib-
âShe made you a father,â She gasps as the words tumble out. She pauses, trying to inhale and regain any sense of composure. âFlorence gave you a child. She did! No matter what I do, I will alwaysâŠâ
âI-I,â He stumbles, realization washing over him as his body gives way to another round of sobs.
She darts into her car and quickly pulls out of the driveway. She doesnât stop as he falls to his knees. She doesnât stop as she drives away from the house and the life they shared. He doesnât stop calling after her, even after his knees hit the concrete, the snot and tears mixing on his tongue as he tries to will her back.
These burdens
Shakes the branches
Leaves falling to the ground
As the bark snaps
In a sickening crack
One too many branches fallen
One too many sacrifices made
How soon until we all fall
So, it was true, then. Harry and Amell - they were still together, still an item, still a unit after so many years. The pair had muddled their way through the aftermath of what Louis and Harry had shared, however undefined it had been at the end, to the trappings of a real, proper, presumably happy relationship.
Well, Louis thought to himself, there was no reason for him to be surprised, really. Heâd always known, even then, that Harry would find the one, great, true love of his life and hang on to him or her with all of his might.
The melody of heartbreak was crashing waves and blithe laughter and stifling laconism, then.

The end of the world was not as she had expected -- there were no fires, or floods. For the most part, the earth had been relatively free of natural disasters. Instead, it was war that tore them apart: a war against science. Genetics should have never been tampered with -- in years before, the idea of it was illegal. But then things changed, and people got worse. The dead began to rise, killing the living, and like an endless cycle, people died, and hours later, rose again.Â
For winter in Scotland, the air held a bite to it. Snow littered the ground in small patches, and the wind howled like a wolf at the moon. Samantha Bell hated the winter in Scotland, especially in the barren wasteland that laid ruined to the tip of the old isle. Snow found its way into every crevice of her clothing and shoes. The wind was worse. It ripped at her hair, even when she had it pulled back, turning its tendrils into tiny whips that attacked at any exposed skin. Her fingers were dry and threatening to crack, and her rations were thinning. If she didn't find a safe haven soon, she'd be the one with decomposed skin and groans giving away her location.Â
Tightening the grip on the sword she'd managed to snake from an old museum, her skin stretched tight over its handle. The copse of trees that stretched in front of her were a dangerous path, no doubt, but it was her only choice. Being out in the open was a straight path to Hell, and while there was no doubt the dead stalked the broken branches and weaved their way to the next victim, but they were scarce and separated. In the very least, there would be space between them, giving her enough time to lay waste to the creatures before moving on. Having the cover of the trees was a lot smarter than standing out in the open, in the very least.Â
She moved quickly, keeping close to the dry bark of the wintery trees as her eyes snaked through the bodies of the wooded beams in front of her. The air was stale, and yet, the only sound came from needles bending beneath her feet and the echoes of moans far ahead of her.
Or so she thought.Â
In an instant, there was quiet justice, and Samantha loosened her hold on the sword. And then there were hands, a moan, and the gut-wrenching smell of death. Her screams pierced the air, but she caught herself, lest she draw even more creatures in her direction. Her sword fell from her grasp, and with only her hands left to defend herself, she pushed at the dead that aimed to claim her for his own. The stench that oozed from him choked her and tears sprung to her eyes. The man must have died early during the outbreak, with skin as paper thin as his own. Her fingers pressed into it, scraping past the barrier and into the muscles that wrapped around bones. The smell was nauseating and her throat clenched, but Samantha held fast.Â
"Argh," Putting her weight into her shoulder, Samantha took a step forward, leaning all one hundred and thirty-two bounds of herself into the dead man. Inhuman sounds assaulted the air, and with her fingers still imbedded in its arm, they fell to a bed of needles and snow. Teeth snapped as it outstretched its neck, moving towards her own neck, cheeks, shoulders -- anything it could sink its teeth into. Pulling her bloody fingers from the arm of the walker, Samantha rolled on her back, as far away as she could until a branch broke beneath her weight. Wherever her sword laid, it was no help to her now. With nimble fingers she snatched the broken branch from the ground, the bark rough against her palms. The walker had barely moved from where it laid on the pine needles and Samantha pounced, throwing her weight towards it.Â
With the sharp end of the stick pointed at its heart, Samantha choked back a cough as she overwhelmed from the stink once more. "What do we say to death? Not today," And as the last word tumbled from her lips, Samantha pressed the broken branch through its chest, and straight into its heart, her fingers trembling as she looked around, grabbing her sword with bloodied hands, leaving the dead behind.
When another branch broke, Samantha turned, holding her sword at arm's length. "Show yourself," She yelled, turning around in three hundred and sixty degrees. "Show yourself!"Â
