#brain hemisphere

U know I'm always going on about the hemispheres of the brain. This is

new stuff, but there is science behind it. My two main sources are the 2008

TED talk by Jill Bolte Taylor, and the 2009 book by Lain McGilchrist, The

Master and His Emissary. I summarize it all in my video:

Biased light stimulation

Within the egg bird embryos always turn their head in such a way that one eye is turned close to the eggshell, and the other one is covered by the body. This causes an asymmetrical light stimulation, which influences developmental processes in both brain halves. PD Dr. Manns uses this mechanism for her experiment. One group of embryos hatch in a lighted incubator, another one in complete darkness. Afterwards the scientists analyze the degree of interhemispheric communication in both groups. The results show that information exchange is impaired without light-stimulation. This research sheds light on the origin of communication processes in the brain. Developmental disorders like ADHD or autism are characterized by a deviating pattern between the two brain halves. Therefore, there is a possibility that the results may help to understand those disorders and give hints for new therapeutic approaches.

I was curious so I looked up some facts about left-handed people. I'm left-handed so that means I'm more right-brained. It makes sense because part of being left-handed, is being creative. 

The right hemisphere deals with more holistic thinking used in art, perception, music and emotions. Left-handers' brains are structured differently in a way that increases their range of abilities. We left-handers have a slight advantage in sports, gaming and other activities in which players face large volumes of stimuli being thrown at them simultaneously or in quick succession. Theoretically, they could more easily use both hemispheres of the brain to manage th­at stimuli, resulting in faster overall processing and response time. Because left-handers live in a right-handed society, left-handed people are more adaptable than right-handed people. Most importantly, left-handed people are high achievers. Yes!!!  Research reveals that left-handed people are in fact high achievers; apparently studies show that left-handed people tend to have a higher average IQ score. 

However, disadvantages such as reading, writing, and talking disorders are more prevalent with left-handers. Maybe that's why I switch my words and phrases around all the time lol. Another disadvantage is that it is a right-handed dominant world so most of everything is made to cater to right-handed people. I remember for my SAT testing I had to to sit in the back corner by myself because I was the only left-handed person in the room. All the desks had that little arm rest for right-handed people. Dumb! And supposedly left-handed people have a shorter lifespan than right-handed counterparts. I did research and found out this might be a myth, but who knows.
