When the rainclouds burst at last, it was Peter’s own fault that they were not yet near the shelter of the house. Lewis had first taken notice of the greying sky more than an hour ago; he had suggested then that they ought to start back, but Peter had insisted plaintively that the weather was really too perfect for catching frogs to think of leaving the river now, and Lewis, never able to deny Peter anything, had not argued. Reclining on the riverbank, he had cast fretful glances up at the gathering clouds every few minutes or so. He held out, reluctantly, for forty-five minutes, but when the air itself around them began to grow heavy with the moisture of the coming rain, he had once more begun to talk of heading home. Peter, with a squirming frog in each hand, had looked thoroughly distressed at the repeated suggestion; this time, however, Lewis did not relent so easily, and after Lewis made a solemn promise that he would put aside his work again tomorrow to accompany Peter back for more frogs then, Peter capitulated. He set free the frogs he had thus far collected, trudged out of the shallows of the river, donned his stockings and shoes again, and set out, arm in arm with Lewis, for the house.
