My ★★★★ review of Boy (2010) on Letterboxd:
Māori Smurf (Dallas) understood Peyo's creation better than Paramount's 2025 movie.

‘Boy’ (2010), directed by Taika Waititi, is yet another movie that nobody aside from my family has seen. (Possible spoilers ahead!)
It follows Boy, a young Maori teen, who’s father returns home after seven years, looking for money he once buried. Boy spends time with his father, trying desperately to gain his approval while mirroring his dad’s irresponsible and idiotic choices.
The cinematography is beautiful for such a simple and low budget film.
However the themes explored are not as simplistic. Grief, love, anger, growing up, and disappointment are among those. The characters are all portrayed amazingly by the range of cast members, each excelling to depict strong emotions which link back to the themes.
Please, if you have 90 minutes spare, watch this film. Or if you have daddy issues.
