Did you know that the Eastern Boxelder Bug (Boisea trivittata) get their species name from the three red bands on its black back?
These true bugs spend a lot of their time on, in, and around boxelder, maple, and ash trees. They prefer to eat the seeds of these trees but will suck on the leaves if needed. Native to eastern North America, these bugs were introduced to Chile in 2020 and have become an invasive species there.
The boxelder bug is related to stink bugs and will produce a stench if under stress (and apparently they taste bad too) so potential predators like birds won't eat them.
