Somewhere last week, a guy came to our house to collect the waste we’d made. Apparently he’s been coming to collect the waste in our house twice in a week, at a charge of GHC 10. But hey!! I’m not a fan of these private waste collectors. I think they don’t have proper waste management skill. They come to take the domestic waste and dump them at unauthorized places. Two years ago, some of these guys were dumping the waste they collected in the bushes along the Tema Motorway. The government had to intervene at a point. On the other hand, their job is very necessary because of the amount of waste created daily in the city. The waste management companies contracted by the government are under staffed, and this is because they are failing to pay their staff well. A clear case is Zoomlion. Zoomlion is the biggest waste management company in Ghana, and government is its major client. Zoomlion charges the government GHC 400 (abt $83) for each of their workers, and they pay the workers GHC 100 (abt $22) each month. One of Ghana’s most celebrated journalists @manassehazureawuni has been fighting against this deal for years because it is injurious to the country and the people working for Zoomlion.
