In a brief chat with Mr. Hanson Blay, the Union Chairman for 37 - Ashaiman Trotros at the 37 Trotro station, he said the driving profession just like any other profession has bad nuts in it. He says unlike some years ago where people were passionate about their profession as drivers because they deemed it a noble service to the country, now people enter the driving profession because they can’t find any other job to do. Mr. Blay thinks these people don’t get the proper training they need to become better drivers, and it is the reason why the respect for Trotro drivers and other commercial drivers has fallen. Mr. Hanson’s sentiment is shared by Historian and researcher @detroittoaccra in her book “Ghana on the Go,” states that “the shifting standards of economic morality, which raised calls to criminalize driver practice, were compounded by changing standards of driver training and professionalism within the industry itself... direct access to a vehicle meant that individuals could more easily become commercial drivers, by passing training as a mate.” Osei Mensah, a driver at the Obra Spot Trotro Station also agrees with Hanson and Jennifer, and says driving has now become a “cheap profession”. Two days ago I read in the news that Saudi Prince and heir apparent to the throne Mohammed Bin Salman has lifted the ban that prevented women from driving in Saudi Arabia. And he’s also loosened many strict and conservative rules. The Islamic nation is now allowing women to drive and letting them go to sports stadiums, allowing music to be played on streets, permitting outdoor performances. And Saudis are no longer forced to go to prayer five times a day. This action I think is a win for women all over the world. It shows that at least women are getting some attention now. I hope he releases all the women activists still sitting in prison.
