In the Woods by Tana French is a thriller that pulls you in from page one and doesn’t let go. The story follows Dublin detective Rob Ryan, who’s haunted by his own past—a mysterious trauma he experienced as a child when two of his friends disappeared in the woods, leaving him alone and bloodied, with no memory of what happened. Now, years later, Rob is faced with a chillingly similar case when the body of a young girl, Katy Devlin, is discovered in those same woods.

What I love most about this novel is that it’s more than just a murder mystery. French writes with incredible psychological depth, giving us a protagonist who’s flawed, complex, and achingly human. Rob’s struggle with his memories is woven seamlessly into the present-day investigation, blurring the lines between what he’s trying to solve and what he’s desperate to remember. As the investigation heats up, so does Rob’s obsession with his own childhood trauma, making you question whether he’s even capable of solving the case objectively—or if he’s unraveling right along with it.

French’s writing style is atmospheric and moody, setting the perfect tone for the story’s dark themes. The woods themselves almost feel like a character, with an eerie presence that looms over everything. And just when you think you have the story figured out, French twists the plot in a way that’s unexpected yet deeply satisfying.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty is a story that feels both thrilling and relatable, centered on three women—Madeline, Celeste, and Jane—whose lives in a close-knit beach town are far more complicated than they appear. Madeline is fierce and funny but struggling with her ex-husband’s new life in the same town. Celeste, the town beauty, seems to have it all but is hiding a painful reality behind closed doors. And then there’s Jane, a young single mom with a mysterious past who’s new to town and just trying to fit in.

As these women’s lives intersect through school drop-offs, coffee dates, and PTA drama, friendships form—and so do tensions. All the little secrets they hold start to bubble to the surface, and it all leads to an unforgettable school fundraiser night that ends in tragedy. What starts as small-town gossip unravels into something much darker, revealing hidden trauma, resilience, and the surprising strength of friendships in the face of adversity.
