an average f/f Literary Fiction novel with a central plotline about two women becoming romantically entangled is often hornier than an f/f Romance Novel with multiple explicit sex scenes because
in the f/f romance novels I've read at least the desire and the horniness is entirely contained within the sex scenes, outside of them the protagonist does not think lustfully about the love interest
but a Literary Novel will go on for several paragraphs about how the love interest's sweat slides down her wrist with a degree of desperation usually only seen in Tumblr textposts about [noun]girls
Me, pointing at a whiteboard full of ancient Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation English-language fandom fanfiction drama: "-so I do entirely empathize with the 'someone is wrong on the internet' reaction to the infamous Jewish Lan Sect fic, but the scale of the backlash was straightforwardly antisemitic and often deeply hypocritical in its framing. Which brings me to my proposition. The vibes of a hardcore Buddhist sect in a culturally-Buddhist milieu are not those of an enclave of a minority with fundamentally different underlying religious and cultural beliefs from those around them, but I believe we can make Jewish Lans work. It simply requires that everyone else be Jewish as well. So in this scenario, extremely Orthodox Lan Qiren keeps catching Wei Wuxian microwaving a plate of cheesy bacon bites at midnight on a Friday, about which WWX is always able to produce a weirdly well-cited argument that this is kosher actually, while gobbling down the Cheesy Bacon Bites, and then as soon as he finishes them he will always claim to have seen the error of his ways even though both of them know he will definitely do it again next week."
The random person I have tied to a chair in my basement: "Mmf mmf mmf!"
Me: "Look, we'll get to my thoughts on the Drake/Kendrick beef when we get there."

disclaimer that my personal experience of Classics as a field is limited to one (1) bachelor's degree, which is to say, in the scheme of things not very much and i'm perfectly aware of thatā
but something i was increasingly alive to, as i got to the end of said degree, was a real siloing of the field as it was presented to me, both in terms of separation from eg the study of literature from other eras and milieux, and in terms of separation from analogous modern situationsā
like, i took one class that's stayed with me on so-called romanization, and on complicating the idea of that process as a one-way, top-down enactment, when in fact of course there was also resistance, and ways in which the assimilated gave a little of their own color back to the hegemonic culture in their turn, and and and⦠and i remember thinking, there's at least one extremely obvious comparison to be made here, that literally no one around me is making: namely americanization in the modern day! you want to talk about a dominant imperial culture, that absorbs people of other cultures and is changed by them in its turnāyou've got an excellent, familiar illustration of that dynamic right at hand! but no, we were only ever to examine the thing as a distant phenomenon in its own particular context; never mind that understanding it to be a process played out more broadly, to which each of us had our own native relationship, might have proved usefully illuminatingā¦
and similarly when i see people passing around posts that are like, āthis roman poet is in control of the image he presents, even when the image he presents is of him not being in control,ā i think to myself, well, yes, i agree with this analysis entirelyābecause thatās how literally all writing works?? in fact you and i both do this ourselves, every day, with our perblogging right here on tumblr dot not-edu???
Some excerpts while I read through Transformers: Exodus (finally) idk why Iāve just been pushing off the novels for the longest time.
worlds greatest trans allies.
Idk why I just enjoy armorhideās internal dialogue. for the 5 seconds armorhide appears.
Interesting how both Starscream and Orion donāt directly say āIām with youā to Megatron. Orion pledging allegiance to the ideas behind Megatron and Starscream saying heās not /against/ Megatron.
I enjoy this insight into different forms of communication (sorry that this image had to be broken into 2) I always imagined as mechanical beings and alien life forms that they would have alternate forms of communication so itās fun to see these. Thereās a lot of different small worldbuilding aspects in this book which I havenāt even seen represented in fanworks which feels like a missed opportunity.
honestly one of the most bizarre things in the world in my opinion is how people can recommend books where one of the key things driving the plot is romance and not mention it. like "oh this sci-fi book is so good", but in reality it's romance sci-fi.
