He was doing it again, talking over you, not listening, as if he didnât want to hear your voice, it was infuriating. You tried to be his friend, I mean you even had a crush on him, though you didnât know why, I mean he was a great guy, a nice guy, just...never to you. He seemed to hate you, and you had no idea why.
He didnât know why he felt this way toward you. He was always in awe of you, but also annoyed. In awe of your intelligence and the way you speak to people, but annoyed at your intelligence and the way you got people to like you. He didnât get it. He didnât get you, and he didnât get why he felt this way, this...love/hate feeling towards you.
You glared at him as he disregarded your suggestion again and kept talking to Agent Booth.
âAlright, you two work on this, Iâll be back soonâ Booth said as he left.
Aubrey barely spared you a glance as he looked back down at his case file. You stared at him for a moment before your anger was enough to cause you to finally ask him what his deal was.
âDo you have a problem with me?â you asked, your voice angry yet hurt
Looking up at you he raised his eyebrows âWhat?â
âDo you have a problem with me?â you repeated âCause I mean, I can never say or suggest anything without you ignoring it completely, I just wanna know what I did to make you hate me so muchâ
He stared at you for a moment, sure he got kind of annoyed at you sometimes, but he didnât hate you. But you thought he did. âI donât hate you! I just..â
âWhat?â you asked getting more frustrated
âI hate that you have an opinion on everything, that you...know everything, itâs kind of infuriating, I wish you would just...â
âWhat? Stop doing my job? Look Aubrey, Iâve tried to be your friend, but you never acted like you wanted to be mine, and thatâs why? Because youâre offended that Iâm smart?â
âNo you listenâ you said leaning forward âWhen I was younger I was quiet and never spoke up in class, I was teased for it, teased for being too stupid. So I changed, I made myself speak up I learned everything I possibly could so I could prove people like that wrong, and now that Iâm proud of my intelligence, proud that I can finally speak without fear I get bullied by people like you for being smart. It took me a long time to get here and I donât need people like you taking that away from me, so if you hate me for the fact that Iâm smart and do my job, then you can go to hellâ you finished by standing and marching out of the room.
Aubrey sat in silence for a second before getting up and following you. He didnât know you, he didnât know that this was something you tried so hard to be because of your past. He didnât know, but he should have. He should have taken the time to get to now you, now he offended you more than he should have.
âWait, y/n! Pleaseâ he said grabbing your arm, causing you to stop.
You were now in an empty hallway, looking at him you stared at him âWhat do you want now Aubrey?â
âJust..Iâm sorry. I didnât know, about your past, or anything really, I wish I did, I just..Iâm sorry I should have taken the time to get to know you before judging what I thought you were. Can we just start over?â
âStart over? Aubrey weâve been working together for like three months, how do you start that over?â
âLike thisâ he said reaching out his hand for you to shake âHi, Iâm James Aubreyâ
Staring at his hand for a second, you surprised yourself and Aubrey with the giggle that escaped your mouth âThatâs stupidâ
âYeah, but I donât really know how else to fix what I did, soo..â he trailed off as he moved his hand slightly closer to yours.
Rolling your eyes slightly you reached out and shook it âHi James Iâm y/f/n y/l/nâ
Smiling at you he nodded his head âThere now...can we go back and work on the case? I swear Iâll actually listen to you, I mean I did before, I just..Iâll show it this timeâ he said, guilty of his past actions.
âPromise?â you said, trying not to smile.
âPromiseâ he said, a genuine smile written on his face.
Nodding you took a step forward, Aubrey turning to walk next to you. Guilt ridden, he swore to himself he would get to know you more, and that he would show he wasnât just some intelligence judging jerk.Â
