Small wonders: the guitar's nut and saddle
Small wonders: the guitar’s nut and saddle
A guitar’s nut and saddle are the two strips of material – usually made of bone or melamine on a quality classical, acoustic or flamenco guitar – that serve as the support points of the strings. The nut is located at the joint between the headstock and fretboard, and the saddle is found on top of the bridge, which is positioned in the centre of the lower bout of the soundboard. The nut and…

Bass Building From Scratch Part 4
Bass Building From Scratch Part 4 is about making the fingerboard and shaping the neck. For me, this was always the most fun part of making the neck and perhaps you’ll agree? New bone nut :: ~1995 Ernie Ball Musicman Sterling [8.8 lbs]
The original nut spacing on this Musicman was very odd. It was inconsistently spaced string to string and the G was pushed in too far from the edge of the board. Along with those issues, the bass came in with small paper shims in each slot in an attempt to minimize open string buzzes. We went for a new properly spaced bone nut to bring the bass back to prime playing condition. I love the thump of a Musicman pickup.

An interesting dreadnought cutaway in for a new bone nut and saddle. All of the braces are made of carbon fiber. Even the neck block is carbon fiber! The neck is a bolt-on and one of the inserts split the stacked heel and needed to be repaired. This guitar got two spots on the vlog - one video on the saddle and another on the nut.
New Bone Nut :: 1961 Fender Telecaster [7.2 lbs]
A beautiful 1961 Tele in for a new bone nut to correct string spacing. The previous replacement nut left the high e too close to the edge of the fingerboard allowing the string to easily fall off of the frets. Great, great sounding pickups!
New bone nut :: 2001 PRS Custom 22 [8.2 lbs]
This early Y2K PRS was in for a new bone nut to improve the action for both slide and fretted playing. The original graphite nut slots had worn down and made slide playing difficult, especially down low.
