So what can we do to protect the Amazon Forest? The European Union - and French president Emmanuel Macron particularly - are trying one tactic: threatening not to sign the so-called MERCOSUR Trade Agreement.
This agreement between the EU and 6 countries in Latin America, including Brazil, is an absolute priority for Brazilâs agricultural sector. The agribusiness lobby in Brazil would lose access to a very lucrative market if the ratification of the Mercosur Agreement were to fail.
But the Amazon Fires and Jair Bolsonaroâs rejection of any foreign help from the G7 or the international community to protect the environment have sparked a bigger question: who will protect the worldâs forests?â
