Painful lower back today. Hard to stand. To sit. To situate my body in this weighty world. It’s only one part of the whole that is me, a piece in my body’s logic. Spoke to me and I didn’t listen. Listen. In 1990, 27 years ago, just out of art school, mind filled with theory, I painted this painting, one of 28 paintings, depicting a body in relationship. To be hung all together puzzle like. Body part to body part. Rectangles horizontally situated and vertically. Covered with Acrylic paint. By My hand. Against A hard surface. My brain and body Up against the world. A soft body. The series was never shown. I documented it and stored it away. Decade after decade. I put the paints away and turned to the page. I made written bodies. Body of work. Learning to Listen. Speak. Impenetrable wall of pain. Vulnerable sweat soaked broken wall. Painted over crack of weakness. My father was not a college graduate. His father was a grave digger who died of consumption. My mother was not a college graduate. Her mother was born on a reservation. Each sperm has one half of mom’s DNA; each egg has one half of Dad’s.
