One of the things I love about where I live, or pretty much anywhere west of Tucumcari New Mexico, are the views and the spaces between trees. Being able to get my bearings while hiking when younger, or see the mountains, lakes and rivers while camping when I was younger are among my fondest memories. Not far from our property in Templeton, on the way to the dump, there was a hill with a lone oak tree. My Grandpa Dick told me on a trip to the dump one time that he always wanted walk up a hill like that and sit under a lone oak tree to die. It was his picture of heaven or the right way to go. Of course being Grandpa he probably told 8 or 10 different ways, but when I was a little boy I always thought he was John Wayne. It wasn't until I got older and learned John Wayne was 6'4" and Grandpa was about 5'4" but hey TV adds 10" anyways . . .
