During the 1998 Tour de France Bobby Julich was apparently struck by Jan's friendliness whenever they found themselves side-by-side in the peloton. During one stage Julich complimented Jan's Tag Heuer watch, to which Jan replied he had a spare one that Julich could have. The gift never materialized until they reached Paris.
Julich told Richard Moore in and interview for the book Étape: "I was in the hotel that everyone goes to in Paris, the Concord Lafayette, all dressed up. I was with my mom and my dad is, like, 'Oh my god, there's Jan Ullrich.' And there was Ullrich with his girlfriend, Gaby, and a million people around him [...] He spots me, races up and says, 'Wait right here.' He races through the people, all trying to get a piece of him. In a few minutes he's back with this beautiful Tag Heuer watch. I still have it to this day."
In seeking more cycling documentaries, I'm finding gems on youtube, like this one, "Overcoming," uploaded in 2018. The yt quality isn't great, but the doc is :) This new team was sponsored by CSC from 2000-2008. It's cool to see Jens Voigt and Bobby Julich here, as a fan of The Odd Tandem. This is their bid for the 2004 (?) TdF. It's particularly poignant compared to the "Unchained" series (especially from the 52:00 point for the next 15 minutes or so)--though I'm grateful for that series in making me a total cheerleader for Alpecin :)
Another doc I recommend, especially if you're new to pro cycling, is "Wonderful Losers: A Different World" Anyone have any other suggestions of cycling docs they like?
One of the things I'm grateful for in this cycling fandom community is all of the podcasts people have recommended and commented upon. The Odd Tandem is one of my favorites--among several--due to the personality contrast between Jensie and Bobby; their obvious enthusiasm for the sport; and the more 'reporterly' aspect of their questions and convo. Actually, all the podcasts I've listened to are great in their own ways. My two favorite episodes are with Silvan Dillier and this one with Kim Andersen. I'd pay him to talk me down from a tall tree :) Plus, his voice is one of the most soothing I've ever heard. I wonder if he ever hypnotizes the riders.
