Hi, I’ve recently become fascinated with Ullrichstrong! Thanks for all your lovely posts 😊 Can I ask you to elaborate a bit about the ring story, I saw in your lore posts I think, you mentioned Lance gave Jan a black ring??
Surely🙏❤️ I even got to the article I found back then.
Basically that was after their first Mallorca get-together that year, 2021. That year when Lance said, during the podcast, "Anna asked me that the other day. She asked, Jan's still good right? And I said, I'm pretty sure I would be one of the first calls. And I would be on the next flight."
And the universe would have it that shortly before Christmas, that same year, Jan was on a visit to Cuba with his girlfriend Elizabeth Napoles, who is Cuban.
During that stay he suffered a setback which lead to his support system (aka Mike Baldinger, who is now Jan's manager and practically ALWAYS there with him) needing to call Lance.
And Lance IMMEDIATELY got on a plane to Mexico to be there for Jan. Lance even said that when Jan woke up and saw him there, Jan looked at him so confused and all Lance could say in that moment was, "Yeah. I'm here." Lance then told Jan, "I said, 'Man, it's Christmas time. I'm going home to my kids. And you are going home to your kids'."
What I only noticed years later when Jan's documentary with amazon dropped, "Jan Ullrich - Der Gejagte" (which FINALLY has English subtitels)... back in 2021 when it happened NOBODY said anything about this having been a relapse. Jan even said to the media that a drug test was done, which was negative. Okay, he had an alcohol relapse; but even about that nobody said a word.
ONLY when this documentary dropped was it made clear that this had been a relapse. And that docu-series only dropped in 2023. So everyone that knew about this having been a relapse, INCLUDING Lance, held tight about it.
Anyhow, as the article mentions Jan went back to a clinic after the Cuba debacle and it was there that Lance gifted him a black ring with stones on the inside as a charm.
I KNOW I had once by sheer coincidence managed to find a picture of Jan while still in hospital in late 2021 or early 2022 on insta and he was wearing a black ring back then. But I cannot find this fucking picture anymore🙈😭
And also by SHEER fucking coincidence LANCE also started wearing a black ring around that same fucking time. Which, yeah, he got married to Anna in 2022 but... YOU SEE HOW THAT LOOKS LIKE, RIGHT!!! LANCE??🤌 YOU HAVE TO SEE HOW THAT LOOKS LIKE!!!

Jan Ullrich waiting for something, while Jens Heppner is steadying him and Udo Bölts is assisting Heppner.
During the 1998 Tour de France Bobby Julich was apparently struck by Jan's friendliness whenever they found themselves side-by-side in the peloton. During one stage Julich complimented Jan's Tag Heuer watch, to which Jan replied he had a spare one that Julich could have. The gift never materialized until they reached Paris.
Julich told Richard Moore in and interview for the book Étape: "I was in the hotel that everyone goes to in Paris, the Concord Lafayette, all dressed up. I was with my mom and my dad is, like, 'Oh my god, there's Jan Ullrich.' And there was Ullrich with his girlfriend, Gaby, and a million people around him [...] He spots me, races up and says, 'Wait right here.' He races through the people, all trying to get a piece of him. In a few minutes he's back with this beautiful Tag Heuer watch. I still have it to this day."
