Sir Nighteye from My Hero Academia deserves love! 🖤
I was wondering if you have been able to compare Uraraka's speech in ch. 324 in japanese to Caleb's translations and the fan translation? Because the line "when heroes are in pain" over Endeavor's face vs Caleb's "when heroes are hurting" carries such a different meaning, the first implying that Enji is himself hurting vs Caleb's translation that could be read as implying that Enji is doing the hurting. Which is more accurate?
this ask is really interesting to me actually, because it really highlights how incredibly difficult translation is. everyone interprets things just a little differently from the next person, and it's so hard to anticipate at times. in this case for instance, it never would have occurred to me to interpret hurting as "hurting other people" in this context. like, I'm not saying that to throw any shade or anything, it's just genuinely fascinating to me how nuanced language is and how the same words can have many different meanings to different people lol. it's wild.
anyway, to answer your question, the line in Japanese is "ヒーローが辛い時" (HIIROO ga tsurai toki). "tsurai" basically means emotionally painful/difficult, so yeah, the line is definitely meant to be "when the heroes are hurting emotionally", as opposed to "when the heroes are hurting other people." I haven't really been paying much attention to fandom controversies the past couple of weeks, so I have no idea whether this translation went down badly or not, but I hope not lol. I think it was pretty accurate as far as things go. anyways thanks for the ask!
