1 Secret Lover
(Taiwan Gaga)
A relatively simple friends-to-lovers story about a boy who fell in love with another boy when they were kids, but got friend-zoned for most of their lives. Until, in university, it becomes too much for him and things escalate. A very domestic, very pretty, high chemistry, Taiwanese take on some ultra-classic BL themes, archetypes, and tropes. Basically a combination of two of my favorite BLs, I Cannot Reach You and We Best Love - two great tastes that tasted great together.
I dithered a little, there is a bit much dub-con for the modern age but for unexplainable reasons I simply did not care. Also this is such a quiet show it fell to the wayside during our collective Summer 2025 Fever Dream (thank you China), but eventually I decided that for me this is damn near perfect live action yaoi from Taiwan.
I like but do not need my BLs to be original. This is exactly the kind of show I love best. Yes it is quiet and simple but it is not bland or boring. This is a classic, like perfectly prepared Taiwanese chicken and rice. Sure, we all love a spicy curry, but sometimes, when the world is going to hell, we just want chicken and rice. And this was the BL equivalent. They embraced the genre and served it warm and sustaining when I needed it most.
2 Cherry Magic
(Thai remake 2024 grey)
A soft charming warm hug of a show about crushes and mind reading and self worth that really worked for me. With no-fuss execution from a consummate team (at GMMTV) and an OG lead pair (proving why they remain eternal and deserve to grow up).
Look, here’s the thing, Cherry Magic is a great Thai BL in its own right - not comparing it to any other iteration. But even when I do compare (and I've seen all the Cherries and read the manga) it stands strong. I, personally, like the Thai BL slightly better than the Japanese live action yaoi, but I think that’s because I just really enjoy Thai BL's style and I LOVE TayNew. Also all the kissing was both present and better in this version. As it should be from Thailand.
3 The Sign
(Thai 2024 YT)
This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.
Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was.
Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not.
Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing.
I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN. Emphasis on balls.
4 Unknown
(Taiwan 2024 YT)
Unknown is a wonderful BL with a pitch perfect portrayal of long term pining, age gap, and the stepbrothers trope. About a young man struggling to survive and raise his sister who then takes in a street urchin. That urchin grows into a serious capable handsome young man who falls deeply in love with his older "brother."
But this is actually about broken people and what we do and feel in the midst of struggle, and about the worst parts of unrequited love.
The acting and chemistry are ON POINT (especially from the leads) which made the resulting characters extremely believable. When it dwells in intimate family drama, it's stunning. It's slightly less successful when it leaves the home and goes gritty. It's few flaws are the result of curtailed length. It could have used more breathing room to deal with side plots, characters, and companion character development. The editing was occasionally choppy and packed with flashbacks that broke the emotional tension.
But those are mere quibbles. For this is an excellent show that deals with some of BLs best taboos, content that I happen to adore. I could rewatch that "you don't know my dreams" scene until the end of time.
5 Wandee Goodday
(Thai 2024 Viki)
A charming quintessentially modern Thai BL about a doctor and a boxer who start as a one night stand and then fall in love. Great rep for everything from Muay Thai, to safe sex, to FUN sex, to ace, to bisexuality, to smiley kisses, to the first legal gay wedding in a Thai BL.
It is a delight and I enjoyed (almost) every single moment of it. Without question it's best traits are active positive representations of green flag boys, communication, and grown-up relationships but the chemistry is on point too.
Highly recommended as one of 2024's best pick-me-ups.
6 See Your Love
(Taiwan 2025 Viki & Gaga)
A darling little show that I genuinely couldn’t have enjoyed more. About a deaf care worker and his spoiled broken little prince. A caretaker takes a job protecting and healing a mafia boy (in all ways). The boy is tortured and broken but still loving and earnest and willing to enter his beloved's world.
Taiwanese BL at its softest and best. This show basically said it was more important to do sign language and kisses properly then any silly mafia fighting bits.
And they were absolutely correct.
7 We Are
(Thai 2024 iQIYI)
I loved show. It was slow to find its stride (I didn’t get into it until ep 6) but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. It’s a soft ensemble piece with multiple couples and very little plot, but I didn’t care because it’s not trying to be anything more substantial.
Essentially this was a series of vignettes covering one year of uni for a queer friendship group finding love, new friends, and laughter. It’s not being harsh with us or it’s characters the way some offerings of this ilk have been (side eyes Friend Zone and Only Friends) nor did it tumble into Gen Y chaos.
In fact, this reminded me more than anything of a refined and elevated Love Sick - just with older characters and occurring within a genre that has matured too. It has that close queer friendship group meets earnest gentleness that made me adore Love Sick and Make It Right so much. In other words, this was Thai BL at its finest, finding it roots again 10 years on, but also stretching upwards and showing us what it could do with that original seed. So? I adored it.
Did it blow my mind? No. But it left me smiling and made me belly laugh quite a bit.
8 Khemjira
(Thai 2025 iQIYI)
The story of a boy laboring under a curse, haunted by ghosts and demons, who’s family, friends, and (eventual) lover all try to help him via spiritual and physical means. While very much a horror BL (not my genre), I’m very glad that I gave this a chance.
This is a diaphanous magical BL of the kind that only really comes along once a year these days - with more lingering notes of I Feel You Linger in the Air than any actual gay horror I could name. It’s not going in my personal rewatch rotation, but I admire its (and its actor's) otherworldly beauty, stylish NC scenes, cultural relevancy, and elegant execution and impact. Full review here.
9 My Magic Prophecy
(Thai 2025 YT)
Paranormal suspense-ish story about a prophetic fortune teller and a hot doctor. I think JimmySea are a solid pair who have been given short shrift on prior shows, but this one was great for a GMMTV throw-away.
Essentially, the psychic and the doctor whose life is threatened must team up to prevent his death. There are traumatic backstories and family drama, and a tasty cop/doctor side dish (who I could’ve used a bit more from). I enjoyed all the sinister characters, mild scenery chewing and the easy to digest plot.
It was a touch simplistic but that just forced everything to lean on the romance, and JimmySea shouldered that burden with aplomb, resulting in a low stress enjoyable light meal. Everyone seemed to know this brief and satisfied it. This one isn't going to make waves but it's a solid offering, easy for me to recommend, and rewatch. (I already have.)
10 Reset
(Thai 2025 iQIYI)
A true BL lakorn about an established actor murdered on his big night who wakes up in his own pre-fame past and falls into the arms of the man who may have been there all along.
A strong lead pair, on point with both acting and chemistry, beautifully shot with a tight script, stunning tender sex scenes, no consent issues, a good dose of cheesy obsessed seme, and some scenery chewing evil makes this one of our best modern Thai BLs. This was an easy 9/10.
Also, it's gotta be said, the lighting in this show was off the hook.
You should watch it. Any BL fan should watch it. It's great.
11 ThamePo

The boyband idol romance I've been waiting for from Korea, only Thailand did it instead. Quintessentially Thai and very GMMTV with good production values, great chemistry, and a solid support cast. It also was a hyung romance (younger boy pursues older one) mostly driven by external conflict and a found family reunion trope, so I didn’t mind (too much) that the romance thread occasionally felt secondary.
I adored this (except, of course, the singing). It's just lovely and pretty and fun. And it has a fabulous series of ending scenes.
12 The Heart Killers
(Thai 2025 iQIYI)
Jojo directed this action romcom about assassin brothers (Khao & Joong) meets conmen: tattoo artist ex-booster (First) and very flirty mechanic (Dunk).
I dithered over how to rate this. It felt like an 8 show wearing a 9’s britches. There were dropped threads, forgotten characters, and unfinished plot lines even with a long run time. And, for me, it doesn’t have significant rewatch potential.
HOWEVER it was so much fun (when one applies no expectations or logic) and I enjoyed the wildly unhinged relationships and, weirdly, music. I mean nobody claimed that we needed Taming of the Shrew only with gay Thai hitmen, but we really needed it. And no one asked for Petruchio to be the bratiest queen ever to strut his perfect skin and croptops across our screen, and yet we loved him for it.
Sure it didn’t make sense and was utterly absurd, but it was terribly earnest and sexy about it.
13 Your Sky
(Thai 2025 iQIYI)
As pulps go this is right up there with my favorite if all time, My Ride, but for different less complex reasons (and with better chemistry). This is a relatively simple yet endearingly old fashioned university set story of a fake relationship between a sunshine sweetie and an older reserved rich kid who slowly fall in love.
It's soft gentle low stakes leans on everything I love best about Thai BL, no damage no trauma. It’s a warm fuzzy robe of a BL that will not hurt you, featuring some of the greenest flags I have ever seen in the genre.
Somehow it manages to be very much a 2025 ThBL while cosplaying with all the nostalgia of a decade prior.
14 Me and Thee
(Thai 2025 iQIYI & YT)
The story of a gangster who learned how to love from very cheesy lakorn soap operas and falls in love with an ordinary kind-hearted photographer. Which made for an easy-to-digest watching experience with high amusement and entertainment value.
This show left a smile on my face every single episode. Partly because it was evident how much fun everybody was having with their roles. It defined utterly ridiculous (set the bar, actually), but was completely self-aware about that ridiculousness. From the misquoted cliché lines, to the absurd backing music, it was glorious, hilarious, and sweet, and the cast was near perfect.
Pond had the time of his damn life. Phuwin was warmly charming and relatable. Est handed out a master class in bodyguard humor. Plus I love a BL that's just a little bit…… well…… stupid. It’s only flaw is in the main pairs’ weak chemistry, and we knew this about PondPhuwin going in. However, because that flaw did impact the romance arc, I don’t think this is a rewatchable show for me. Still, I enjoyed myself so much I have to rate this highly and it's currently the highest rated BL in Thailand (of all time). Yes, 2gether has be dethroned.
2023 BLs that you may have missed
I Feel You Linger in the Air (Thai grey) - IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). My full feels detailed here.
Kiseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Gaga) - Triggers for knife play, child abuse, lingering trauma. The plot of this BL is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer.
My School President (Thai Viki) - GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues.
I Cannot Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan Viki) - This classic friends-to-lovers high school BL is everything Japan does best. Angsty. Emo. Aching. Driven by real thirst. Full review here.
My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Gaga) - This style of live action yaoi really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but are so repressed they don't realize they're in love. It's higher heat than we usually get from Japan's HEA stuff and it's also bruisingly romantic. Emphasis on bruise.
Our Dating Sim (Korea Viki) - This is a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. Full review here.
Jun and Jun (Korea Viki) - A delightful office romance about an ex-idol who joins cubical life only to find his new boss is his first love. Other boys are sniffing around too. My only caution is this is for fans of the BL genre only, I don’t think it’ll work for anyone else.
The Eighth Sense (Korea Viki) - This if one of the few KBLs that feels more atmospheric gay coming of age romance than strictly BL. It’s got a bit of an age gap, country boy/city boy, stellar acting, complex characters, and leads with great chemistry and tension.

You didn't ask for it, but I handed out some high makes to Japan & Korea over the last few years so here they are, just in case you wanna branch out.
Our Youth AKA Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyo ni Shinkochu
(Japan 2025 Gaga)
Adapted from a Korean Webtoon I can see why this went to Japan, it's way too harsh for KBL. Essentially a story about two lonely boys from opposite sides of the track who fall madly in love in high school, despite the fact that one is neglected and the other physically abused. This has a rough premise (all the trigger warnings) BUT is an oddly lovely little show. Darker than is my personal preference but sublimely stylish, turns out sometimes that combo works for me (see The 8th Sense). The word that springs to mind is “refined.” I enjoyed the restful distancing feel of the beautiful filming style which made the abuse feel less intimate. Add to that Japan's signature utter thirst and some ostentatiously poetic dialogue and this became edgy pretty which unexpectedly worked for me. Plus a fantastic ending.
School Trip: I Happened to Join a Group of Cool Guys AKA Shugakuryoko de Nakayokunai Group ni Hairimashita

This was the most classic, pitch perfect, high school BL we’ve gotten from Japan since I Cannot Reach You. About a sophomore boy separated from his geeky friends adopted by a quad of popular boys one of whom has a mad crush on him. Somehow exactly that simple but also so much deeper and more special. This was charming and sweet and pining and everything I want in a JBL including first love spilling over into awkwardness, glorious friendship groups, and bonus elder gay rep (such a rarity).
Love For Love's Sake
(Korea 2024 iQIYI)
Y trigger suiside A KBL isekai (finally!) about a man who must win a game by convincing a reserved teen outcast to fall in love with him. Of course, that teen represents himself and his own unhappiness. Like many queer narratives, this show is actually about self worth, trust, and found family, and it is VERY on the nose. But I don’t expect subtlety from my BL and I enjoyed its truly lovely redemption arc and earnest performances. I found the narrative a touch disjointed with overworked filming angles BUT the crisp consistency of tone, script, and immersion is beyond the norm for BL. You will drown in this show and like it that way. The leads have fantastic chemistry and it's ultimately highly rewatchable and utterly charming, which counts for a lot in my universe.
Ball Boy Tactics
(Korea 2025 Gaga)
Korea's best BL of 2025 by a landslide. After retiring from gymnastics a gold medalist, painfully shy Jiwon struggles to survive university. He gets adopted by a group of jocks and falls in love with campus heartthrob and basketball star JeongU. I loved it. Of course I did. It’s great! It's charming, well executed, and prettily acted (especially from the actor playing JeongU who comes to us from the stage and we can tell). Can’t go wrong with this one, I smiled the whole time I was watching.
China is BACK
Revenged Love

A remake of 2015's Falling in Love with a Rival (AKA Counter Attack). From China ON Taiwan's GAGA distributed via Singapore? What alt-reality is 2025?
The story of a scrappy street urchin who, in order to get revenge on his ex-girlfriend, decides to seduce her current boyfriend. The boys fall in love but that's just the beginning. There’s also a side couple made up of their respective best friends, one of whom is a doctor.
The friendships are as important as the romances in this show, one of which is a blatantly queer quasi frenamies and the other of which is the "how to be gay" trope. The entire shows' love language is manipulation, and everybody is both good-looking and adorable. There’s a lot of "who falls first, who falls harder?" But they all fall very hard in the end.
My feelings? This was a GREAT BL and I enjoyed it partly because of the online enthusiasm for it, somewhat mitigated by the unpleasant "will it won’t it" tension around cancellation.
But something like this cannot be divorced from its time. And that’s part of my complex emotions with this one. If China hadn’t undergone such severe censorship over the past decade, we would’ve gotten shows like this sooner and those shows would have evolved. This is a peak BL… for 2019.
We’re not in 2019 but I kind of feel like I have to rate Revenged Love as if we were. Consequently it gets a 9/10, but it's for BL fans only, I wouldn't recommend this not non-drinkers of the pink milk.
Desire the series aka ABO Desire

Close on the herculean strides of Revenged Love, China continued its historic 2025 run on the international BL market with the first true ABO mpreg piece.
There is some semblance of story = about a boy who falls in love right before he manifests as an enigma (secret extra-special tippy-top of food chain) and then obsessively stalks/courts the object of his devotion though means both fair and foul (mostly foul). Why so secretive and manipulative? No reason, just is.
This show focuses on this most perfect sociopath ult babygirl being a violent, unchecked, conniving, psychotic monster so pretty he will hurt your teeth intent on possessing, owning, and sexing-up one increasingly confused alpha. And he wins and we like (so does the alpha).
There is actual on screen kissing (yes, from China) combined with some of the world's hottest shirt suspenders and some the world's ugliest shirts.
The end.
That's the whole show.
Oh… there is a nod at a intriguing side couple who ended up being mere set dressing. And there is also actual ON SCREEN mpreg. 2x. (Which broke Tumblr.) Plus China aired this by distributing through Hong Kong to a Taiwanese platform and if that isn't How Dare levels of malarkey I don't know what is. Wild times we live in.

The connection between the two main characters is electric—when I’m talking about chemistry THIS is what I mean! It’s a very familiar feeling fantasy setting (think like video game like, demon’s tower with him at the top) but the plot is a twist on that which is a welcome sight~!
(An aside—it sort of reminds me of the Webtoon Mage & Demon Queen if anyone knows that—we went from GL to BL 😂)

Man oh man…My best friend really really loved reading through this one. So far the anime has been faithful too so we’re content!
Isekai with some introspection on the implications of being summoned to another world and declared the savior of an entire nation just because. Love that! The character designs are a pull for me, and although it took me a second to warm up to the characters they are a delight to watch.
Our chronically exhausted office worker man is so relatable and entertaining, along with the captain of the Royal guard taking care of him like a troublesome kid—It’s really magical. For me this is quite the different pick because Shonen Ai usually ain’t my thing but this one stands above…worth the read and probably the watch! (Also I really like the Prime Minister don’t flame me)

But hey, for what I was fed it was good. Concise, and it’s a…rugged dynamic between the two. But yeah! For what it was, I enjoyed it since you don’t see many…Western BLs to begin with so it’s automatically gonna stand out to me.

It’s Alpha x Alpha sooo give this one a read too! Hopefully it’ll captivate you the way it did for me. The entire time I was locked in, entranced with the whole thing…is this the power of a manhwa based on a novel? Maybe. But yeah this one is for all time…

Best Writing
Love is Like a Poison (2024) - Ryoma's narration gave the show so much personality, but the most commendable about this show was how it kept getting better and better. The ending was perfect, because it provided the audience with continuity while simultaneously tying all the loose ends. It was not greedy! It understood what the show needed, especially for Haruto's character.
Love for Love's Sake (2024) - The concept of isekai is not new, but this show added its own twists to made it one of a kind. There were great choices made in this. It knew the perfect time to reveal information that would greatly benefit the narrative. Not only that, the show also managed to surprise me by being a mental health advocate. A little fact, this had one of they saddest break-up scenes I've seen last year.
Honorable Mention: My Beautiful Man S1 (2021) - The show provided me so much space for thinking, wondering, appreciating, and understanding of Hira and Kiyoi's relationship. The story had conflicts unique to the characters, and it was overall, so literary. The monologues were my favorite part along with the switching of point-of-views.
Most Beautiful Mis-En-Scene
A Time of Fever (2024) - This show bathed in sunlight! The yellows and oranges are so beautiful, so fitting for the coming-of-age theme, and so perfect for a prequel that's supposed to tell a story of the past. Every location is well-lived. They don't feel like sets, but real places. The camera work is perfect! Each frame is deliberate. There is a quality of intruding that makes all the scenes between Hotae and Donghee so raw. It's just an overall eyecandy.
Honorable Mention: Love for Love's Sake (2024) - The show has one of the best camera works on this list, but I did find it repetitive. Everything else is so pretty though.
Best Scene
Hira's Self-Pleasuring Scene in Episode 1 of My Beautiful Man (2021) - Hear me out! This scene surprised me, almost appalled me, so much. However, after rewatching the show 4 times at least, I grew a profound appreciation for the scene in connection to Hedonism. Hira wasn't even touching himself! He's merely looking at Kiyoi's face and thinking about him. I'll be talking more about it in a post one day, but you've got to give me a chance first.
Haoren and Chihiro's "first kiss" on the boat in Happy of the End (2024) - Well, something about them going on a date, kissing for the "first time," and Haoren telling Chihiro he "wants to die," altered something in my brain. The vulnerability was so loud—I swear I can peek into Haoren's soul if I looked into his eyes long enough. I've never experienced a scene like this before.
Best Official Soundtrack
Re-Move On by Gemini and Fourth - The impact of this OST is undeniable. Not only that, this song is so good! I'm glad they kept the streak of good songs since My School President.
geometric by osage - This song genuinely fit the feeling of Love is Like a Poison, and the sound directors perfectly knew when to play the song at the end. I genuinely see the show flash before my eyes whenever I listen to this song. It sounds like the ending of an adventure. Too bad, it's not talked about enough.
Other technical awards will be added in future lists once I get better at my production classes. Best editing, best script, best score, and everything else are way out of my expertise. I'm afraid I'll have to pass on this first. Here are categories created without much logic, just instincts:
Certificate of Appreciation for Better Sound Design
Love Sea (2024) - After the hell my ears went through in Love in the Air, the company finally improving the audio equipment, and doing a better job at editing the recordings. Listen, it's not perfect, but it's definitely better. Hearing Tongrak and Mahasamut despite the harsh winds, and the lack of actors accidentally touching the microphone again made my ears so happy.
Certificate of Appreciation for Prettiest Kiss
Takara's Treasure (2024) - I've seen better and stronger kisses, but the way Takara kisses Taishin is just so beautiful. They are pretty kissers—visually pleasing lip-lockers. You can almost feel how soft their kiss is through the skin.
Certificate of Appreciation for Cutest Characters
I Hear the Sunspot (2024) - I really love watching Kouhei and Taichi individually the most. They interact with their environment delicately, full of care, understanding, and full of kindness. Both Kouhei and Taichi are very big characters, in my opinion, that's why the show somehow felt underwhelming, because I feel like there were so many unexplored and underexplored areas in their stories. I'm in dire need of a season 2.
Overall Best Show in 2024
Love for Love's Sake (2024) - I only have feelings about this show, not thoughts. The writing, cinematography, acting, chemistry, editing, and message won me over. It's one of those shows that you think about for so long after watching it. If I loved it any less, I might be able to talk about it more.

I literally got a iQIYI subscription for Your Sky. I'm also watching Perfect 10 Liners, because nobody told me it's so funny and cute!
I'm looking forward to Ticket to Heaven and Love You, Teacher this year. I hope they meet my expectations, because they both look so promising.
