Mentioning that westernized approach to BL culture is SUCH a good point. For as much as the internet has definitely opened up parts of the world to one another, there are still HUGE differences between different countries and cultures and where they are progressive-wise, particularly in terms of lgbt+ acceptance. I’ll admit I’m a lot more familiar with Japan in terms of culture and BL than that from China, though I’ve heard there’s a good bit of overlap in the media, in terms of common themes and problems. When approaching media from another country, it’s really important to have sort of context for the content you’re consuming, and how that content fits in with the society and culture as a whole.

I also think it’s really important to compare apples to apples!  There are Plenty of lgbt romance novels available in English, but you can’t just pick up an lgbt novel at random and decide to compare it to MDZS. It needs to come down to the questions “Who wrote this? Who is the target audience of this? What is the PURPOSE of this?” 

And there’s plenty of english stories out there that are written by lgbt people and are meant as realistic representation of lgbt people. there are ALSO plenty of stories out there that are NOT written for or by lgbt people and are NOT meant to be seen as representation! 

MDZS isn’t meant to be lgbt rep! It’s not fair to judge is against “good lgbt representation” because that’s not even close to the purpose of the story. It’s a romantic gay erotica story meant for entertainment purposes! So to really analyze it and have some proper context for the content of the story, you have to be able to compare it to a) other works in the BL industry and b) other works that are actually in its specific genre.
