“LAND OF THE FREE / HOME OF THE SHADE”
by Bisco Smith
Bisco Smith believes that “art is energy transmitted through various mediums.” His energetic, expressive work is characterized as “a blend of graffiti deconstruction, abstract gesturalism, action painting, and style writing” capturing the unseen rhythms of music. Having just seen his recent work for The Container Yard on 4th St. in the LA Arts District, his alternate Instagram title—Freedom Ain’t Free / How Much You Pay? (from the 3rd and 4th lines of red lettering)—immediately captured my attention. Long concerned about jingoistic phrases used as justification for militarization and erosion of freedom I had to reach out and find out a bit more. Bisco says the writing is freestyled in the form of lyrics and just flows naturally: “what comes out comes out.” While, as I suspected, he leaves the details open to individual interpretation, he did confess that while working on the piece he was thinking about all that’s wrong with our distortion of values. @biscosmith @thecontaineryard
