Honestly, I felt like I was on the Food Network’s Show called Best Thing I’ve Ever Ate.  Every place I have ever had Pasteis de Nata does not even come remotely close to the orgasm that I had in my mouth when I tried Manteigaria in Lisbon, Portugal.  I will never ever look at Pasteis de Nata the same way.  I would buy a 1 way ticket to Lisbon just to eat at Manteigaria again.

They sell so many that they are constantly fresh and hot when you buy it.  I was seriously being a creeper and watching these guys make the dough, roll it out, cut it, and meticulously press it into the pasteis pans.  Each pasteis dough is carefully pressed into the pan 1 by 1.  Then filled with nata and baked fresh.

Little saints giving you bundles of joy.  Do you eat your pasteis plain, with cinnacmon and/or powered sugar?

Imagine how light and crispy the buttery crust is that holds the creamy egg-yolk and creamy custard.  The custard is not too sweet and creamier and thicker than Pasteis de Belem.  When you bite into the pasteis de nata, the contrasting texture of the crispy, buttery shell and the warm custard is a match made in heaven! My mouth is watering right now thinking of  Manteigaria.

There are 2 locations in Lisbon.  One is in the Time Out Market and one is a shop.  The shop is pretty small with a standing bar that you can watch them make the pasteis de nata.  The other is in the large Time Out Market where you can access inside the market or in front.  If you go to the one in front, then you can purchase it to go.  If you go in the Time Out Market, you can find a seat to enjoy the pasteis de nata if they last long enough.  My tip is don’t just purchase one or even two because you’re going to regret it.  You need to get at least three to eat right away then a couple more to take with you (if they last) and enjoy one of the many Miradouro or viewpoints of Lisbon.  

PS. I like these better than Pasteis de Belem. Sorry, monks.
