Hey, thanks for the note :)

If a work is still in progress, then a comment on each chapter obviously makes sense. But what if the story is already done and I’m just reading it all in one go? Would you mind if I do the same thing?

And from a commenter’s POV*, I’d say that it depends on how much effort I put into my comment.

If all I do is leave you a note to let you know that I enjoyed your story, and that I’m glad you wrote it, I’m not anticipating any sort of reply on your part.

But if I try to articulate exactly what it was I liked about it - the way you wrote the characters, your choice of words, the way the story played out, the atmosphere you created - or if I just flail at you about everything your story made me feel, then I’d absolutely appreciate some sort of acknowledgement.

Because I do this in the hopes of interacting with you, the writer, and to try and encourage you to give me more writing, because I’m greedy like that. But it’s not easy to do (for me, at least), and if I don’t get any response then I tend to assume that I’ve just misjudged, and you don’t welcome that sort of response. And then I think twice about doing it again the next time, because it's a feedback loop - if I don't know you like these sorts of comments, then leaving them just becomes a chore for me.

When all’s said and done though, it’s entirely up to you how you want to respond to comments, and you shouldn’t ever feel pressured to respond in a way that you are not comfortable with. Or hell, even if you just don’t want to. Obligation shouldn’t come into this for either the writer or the reader, y'know?
