Anecdote I heard at a dinner party hosted by former Bernardo Bertolucci associates: When Anthony Quinn was brought to Italy to shoot Ulysses, there was an unexplained delay in getting the film underway. Tiring of hearing one excuse after another, Quinn finally confronted producers Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti saying he would return to the states if he didn't get the real story. They decided to 'come clean' and confessed that they had commissioned screenwriter Ben Hecht who turned in a great screenplay but adapted the wrong 'Ulysses'--the novel by James Joyce rather than Homer's epic. Not wanting to make the error public, the producers were stalling until screenwriters were finishing their adaptation of the correct Ulysses. Seeing an opportunity, Quinn said he'd remain in Italy on one condition: the producers would produce another film for Quinn to star by an Italian director he had met while the script was being finished. Who is he?, they wanted to know. Some fellow named Fellini was the answer. That a$$h@(%?, they exclaimed. Quinn was insistent and, over a barrel, the producers relented. Thus, La Strada was made while finishing touches were applied to Ulysses script.
