I think I'm slowly starting to understand now why so many ppl ship Coppernauts...
Look, I'm not sure if this is the real reasoning for the ship's popularity or if I'm just mistaken, but this is what I started to think after rewatching the movie several times.
Usually, ppl ship these two together because it's the "Opposites Attract" trope thing, and because both Benny and GCBC got dismissed by their own teams (Benny not being allowed to build spaceships while GCBC getting fired for ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD REASON).
But back to the point, we gotta recall what our poor cop boy was forced to do while working for Octan. And I'm not gonna count with his parents, but I'll count what he did to the main gang:
-Emmet: He treated Emmet like absolute garbage in their very first seconds of interaction.
-Lucy: Even if this wasn't directly caused by him, GCBC had an indirect key role in developing Lucy's darker side that she used as a shield to guarantee her own safety and hide her shame of having indirectly cooperated with President Business' totalitarian regime through her the POPular Band and the Everything is Awesome song.
-Batman: Honestly, I can't think of a single thing that GCBC may have done to Batman besides hunting him and the Justice League in general.
And here are the heavier examples (at least in my opinion):
-Unikitty: This time, GCBC directly caused harm to Unikitty by raiding the Cuckoo Cloud Land with Business' robots and LITERALLY DESTROYING IT PIECE BY PIECE. I mean, that itself is heavy already, especially considering that Unikitty is just a little kid. Like, CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW IT FEELS TO HAVE YOUR HOME DESTROYED?!
-MetalBeard (my fav character): Once again, GCBC indirectly was responsible for MetalBeard losing not only his pirate crew, but his whole body as well, if you don't count the head, of course. Even if the raid only failed miserably because of the robots and Octan's security system, GCBC was already working there.
-Vitruvius: Honestly, I can't really put the indirect blame on our cop boy again on this, because, like, most of the harm Vitruvius suffered (getting blinded and later dying) was rather caused by Business himself than GCBC.
After listing all of this, here's what I think:
Benny is also a Master Builder, so he wouldn't be an exception to being oppressed. Therefore, the only kind of "suffering" I can imagine him having gone through during Business' regime was having to hide his identity, because most of us know that his real name is "Benjamin", so I came up with a theory that he and the Space Crew likely had to use codenames to avoid getting kidnapped by robots, so that way, Business wouldn't suspect that there are Master Builders in the Space Crew, and would ignore them.
I could be wrong, but this is the only explanation I could think of.
Therefore, out of the main gang, Benny likely went through a less traumatic experience compared to the rest. In fact, the movie kinda tells us that already, because he's mostly being restricted or not being allowed to build.
That, combined with my headcanon about his past, ultimately makes Benny the less hardened of the Fellowship.
Finally, we have that famous scene near the end of the movie where, after Scribble Cop was created in order to replace Good Cop and finally quit Octan for once and for all, Benny was the very first person from the Fellowship of Strangers with whom he showed niceness.
A lot of ppl think of this scene as a ship sail because Scribble Cop was technically the very first person to actually allow Benny to build a spaceship in the movie. But to me, I like to think of this scene as Scribble Cop's first step on redemption; by acting nice to the first person that showed up in front of him.
I can't really tell what Benny thinks of Scribble Cop, but given his nature, it's safe to say that he's likely very open to accepting someone like him if the former is trying to change, whether in a platonic or romantic way.
(Also, please don't mistake Coppernauts with "Enemies to Lovers", Coppernauts is FAR from being enemies to lovers, because GCBC quit Octan so he isn't an enemy anymore. Oh, and btw, Coppernauts isn't a crackship either, because Benny and GCBC both literally exist in the same universe.)
